Netologon Error Event ID 5723

Event ID: 5723
The session setup from the computer NETAPPVOL failed
because there is no trust account in the security
database for this computer. The name of the account
referneced in the security database is NETAPPVOL$.
000xc000018b

I get this error message constantly in my event log, the
machine is not listed in active directory, and if I try
to add it, it says that it already exists. Microsofts
website said the 000xc000018b meant the computer had been
deleted, and something about secure channels with the
BDC. It said I could do a Netdom to reset the channels.

Anyways, can anyone verify this, or give me more idea of
what to do. Using windos 2000 server, and the offending
maching is a Network Appliance Filer. I think it got
deleted, but its still in the SAM? I dont want to do a
Netdom until I know what is gonna happen.

Hi Craig

Can you advise where this event is getting logged (DC, PDC emulator, client)
and what the structure of your environment is like ... how many DC's, sites
etc?

Kind regards

The main PDC. I tried adding the filer to the domain, but
it wouldnt communicate. When I try to manually add the
filer name "netappvol" to active directory, it says it is
currently in use.

Hi

The only info I can find on this suggests a SAM corruption. You might try
powering down the PDC emulator and attempt to join the domain after that.
If this works, I'd suggest disconnecting the PDC emulator from the network
and rebuilding it. You'd then need to seize the FSMO roles over to the
other DC and clean up the directory so the PDC data is removed by following:

216498 How To Remove Data in Active Directory After an Unsuccessful Domain
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=216498

If powering down the PDC emulator doesn't help, you're probably not looking
at a very simple solution. Start considering backups of the system state
etc. Possibly worth logging a case with Microsoft to get more detailed
analysis and assistance.

Here's more info on that error:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=5723&eventno=106&source=NETLOGON&phase=1

Accordingly, there can be a number of reasons this is happening. When you
are mentioning PDC and BDC, are there NT4 DCs in the picture or are they all
Win2000? The PDC and BDC term can be confusing since they are legacy NT4
terms. However, a PDC Emulator is a role that exists on a DC in each domain.

Anyway, a couple I can think of that may have caused this:
1. Single label domain name ('domain' rather than 'domain.com')
2. Deleted object in AD that hasn't been properly cleaned out. Need to do a
Metadata cleanup to remove it.
3. Personal firewall running on the DCs. Even if you had Zone Alarm on it,
sometimes the uninstall can get corrupted and leaves files behind that
affect communication.
4. DNS misconfiguration (using your ISP's DNS in IP properties can cause
numerous problems).

If you can enlighten us on the above, that would be great. Other than that,
I would probably follow Mark's suggestions to log a call to PSS for this.
