MS What Is going on with networking?

NP, Brian. Just a little diversion there. But I assembled the puzzle.

Looking at aggregated browstat and ipconfig logs for all 3 computers.
# All computers have connectivity, and are getting DHCP settings.
# All 3 computers are in domain / workgroup Workgroup.
# All 3 computers acknowledge same master and backup browser, Dadsnew.
# No computers have IPV6.
# Computer B, Dadsnew, has IPX/SPX.
# Computer B, DadsNew, is denying administrative access ("error = 5" from
Michele and Abitkg7).
# Computer B, Dadsnew, only sees 2 computers in the domain / workgroup.

Is DadsNew running XP Home or Pro? If Pro, is it running Simple or Classic File
Sharing? If Classic, is it using Guest authentication? Remember XP Home is
Simple File Sharing, and Guest authentication, only.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Simple>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest>

Recommendations:
# Remove IPX/SPX from DadsNew.
# Check Guest account on Dadsnew per instructions here.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Help>
# Check registry setting restrictanonymous on all 3 computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>
# Check all computers for misconfigured / overlooked firewall.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>

For comprehensive information, read these two troubleshooting guides:

Chuck,

The registry on Dadsnew has 2 restrict anonymous keys in the LSA. Could
this be it?

Brian,

The restrictanonymous value should be 0. The restrictanonymoussam value is not
relevant to this problem.

Which computer is running XP Home?

Don't forget to check Guest on Dadsnew, and remove IPX/SPX.
Chuck,

I have made progress! On Dadsnew (B) I removed an advertising network
protocall (don't know how it got there!) and now C and A can see B which
are both XP Pro. However in my computer, network places the workgroup
is no longer visable on B (dadsnew) or C (recroom). I can access B&C or
visa versa by using add network places which works for me. Now to pc A
(Michele) which is XP Home. It can see PC B and C however B and C
cannot still see A. I can't tell how good it feels to have something
good happen!

Thanks Again,

Brian

Brian,

That's great news! If you run out of changes, and you still have problems,
rerun "ipconfig /all" on all computers, and we can do detailed diagnostics.
Just try to post all logs in this thread, not elsewhere. ;-)

We are having the same problem in my house. For weeks I've been trying to
figure out what was wrong, thinking I was making a mistake. I'll shelve the
home network for now, or at least trying to get the components that don't
communicate folders to each other to share. Thanks everyone. Wish I had
looked here sooner.
It would save people lots of time and aggravation if MS would inform the
public that the network setup may not function correctly. You wouldn't
believe how many times I reread directions and shutdown and restarted and ran
that stupid wizard.

Gail,

It's good that you tried to sort it out on your own, but if you can't, why not
ask for help. Maybe somebody here can help you.

Gail,

I know there are many of us going thru this issue. It had to be one of
MS's updates that changed the network settings! I managed to get my 2
xp pro pc's to see ecah othere again but the xp home is still not
accessable. There is lots of help here in this newsgroup.

Good Luck,

Brian

Gail,

I have got it! Chuck in this group suggested to change the restrict
anonymous setting in the registry and I did that on the XP Home PC and
the 2 XP Pro pc's and now all 3 can see each other and share files!
They will give you the info you need to change you registry here in this
newsgroup.

Brian,

Was the restrictanonymous setting the final solution needed for you? That's a
very common setting, but it's not the only one needed by some.

The plain truth is, Windows Networking, and File Sharing, is pretty simple once
you've done it a few times, but you have to work on it from the bottom up. You
have to get the more basic needs like connectivity, and firewalls, resolved
before you can look at registry settings and permissioning. My troubleshooting
guide is organised that way.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html>

Once you get all of the Windows Networking needs resolved, if you need to, you
look at your File Sharing setup.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html>

But you do have to be patient, and persistent, to get everything working. And
when you find a solution, and you feed it back here, it helps everybody. What
helped you did not come from magic, it came from those before you, who had
similar problems. Your experience can help more after you.

So thanks for the positive feedback. That's generally the most reward we get
here.

Chuck,

Your Welcome and I thank-you for your help and patience with me! Yes
the restrict setting in the registry was the ticket. That worked for
me. Now for the big question?? I never changed that setting in any of
my 3 PC's so what did? I have to suspect one of the windows updates
because it has happened to so many recently.

Thanks Again,

Brian

Brian,

You are welcome, it is good to learn here. I am learning too, and everybody may
learn if you help us now.

Can you, by any chance, retrieve your Windows Update history? I think you are
right, one of the updates changed your restrictanonymous setting. Maybe we can
find out which one.

Brian,

Thanks for your input here, much appreciated. I'm going to ask around in
another forum or two, and see if there's an identifiable problem.

BTW, Brian, posting your email address openly will get you more unwanted email,
than wanted email. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself
a bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - read this article.

Thanks, Chuck. OK, I see there are a few solutions offered on this site and
I'm encouraged that yuo helped Brian solve his issues. I'll dive in to the
abyss again this weekend or early next week. Don't I sound excited?
Actually, I'm very encouraged by the posts, and now if something doesn't
work, I'll try something else rather than repeating the same error a zillion
times.

Oh, and I see you're an MVP and you have a blog that I can investigate. I had
forgotten about the MVP resource. Wonderful.
