MS What Is going on with networking?

B

B T Cloutier

Looking at all the recent post in newsgroups and everywhere else it is
obvious that one of patches must have caused all the problems people
(including me) are having on their home networks! It has happened to
many people who had working networks before and now they can"t access
other PC's or share files on their home networks. I hope MS can come out
with a patch to fix this mess soon!

I have 6 Windows XP Computers - 5 Pro and 1 Home - all SP2 and
completely updated with absolutely no networking problems. If you would
like help with your particular problem, please post back with all
details of your computers, your networking setup, and the problem.

Brian,

I can't speak for MS (not too many here can, most everybody is just a civilian
like you), but there's not really any recent increase in problems here. Just
lots of background noise.

There are a lot of problems with common causes, but the details are all
different. As such, it's useless to make a blanket diagnosis, you have to
analyse each problem, figure out what causes it, and determine a solution.

I see that you posted here earlier, and Steve tried to help you. Did you bother
to respond to his post? That's the best way to get help.

I can't do an ipconfig /all on this PC because I get a 16 bit subsystem
error.

Thanks,
Below was my original post. I can't do a ipconfig /all on this PC (B)
because I am getting a 16 bit subsystem error. I am leaning toward
trying a repair install or the old Format C and start over.

Thanks,
Brian

I have 3 pc's on my home network 2 with XP Pro and 1 with XP home. I
had I no issues then all of a sudden 2 of the PCs can no longer access
each other on the network. PC A can'tconnect to PC B or C. PC B can't
connect to A(XP Home) or C(XP Pro) but can access B(XP Pro). PC C
cannot connect to A or B. I get the unable to connect error. I have
tried running
the network wizard with no luck. Something has changed. Could it have
been one of the windows updates? I have a friend that is having the same
problem! His desktop can access his laptop but the laptop cannot access
the desktop. This seems to be a big issue right now with XP. (All PC's
mentioned are XP) I have tried the following:
1. Turned off windows firewall
2. Installed Netbeui (TOOK OUT 7-17)
3. Network ID.

Please help soon!

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

If you can't run "ipconfig /all", then you have problems. You have to fix your
problem before working on your network.

First, reset TCP/IP <http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357>

If that doesn't help, try running the System File Checker. Have your install CD
available, and hit Start - Run - type "sfc /scannow".
<http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310747>
I had to use ipconfig from run commandcom.exe. If I use ip in the run
box the window opens briefly then closes. Pasted below is the ipconfig
for PC B.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

OK, looking at "ipconfig /all" for DadsNew:
# Computer has connectivity to DHCP server.
# Computer has no excessive protocol (no IPV6).
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/reading-ipconfig-and-diagnosing.html>

In a case like yours, we'll all benefit from examining "browstat status" and
"ipconfig /all" for each of the 3 computers. Then we'll probably try CDiag
next. Please see this article for instructions:

please tell me where you post it so I don't have to search thru all of your

IP and browse stat from PC C.

<SNIP>

NP, Brian. Just a little diversion there. But I assembled the puzzle.

Looking at aggregated browstat and ipconfig logs for all 3 computers.
# All computers have connectivity, and are getting DHCP settings.
# All 3 computers are in domain / workgroup Workgroup.
# All 3 computers acknowledge same master and backup browser, Dadsnew.
# No computers have IPV6.
# Computer B, Dadsnew, has IPX/SPX.
# Computer B, DadsNew, is denying administrative access ("error = 5" from
Michele and Abitkg7).
# Computer B, Dadsnew, only sees 2 computers in the domain / workgroup.

Is DadsNew running XP Home or Pro? If Pro, is it running Simple or Classic File
Sharing? If Classic, is it using Guest authentication? Remember XP Home is
Simple File Sharing, and Guest authentication, only.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Simple>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest>

Recommendations:
# Remove IPX/SPX from DadsNew.
# Check Guest account on Dadsnew per instructions here.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Help>
# Check registry setting restrictanonymous on all 3 computers.

# Check all computers for misconfigured / overlooked firewall.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Windows Task Manager and go to
the Process tab.

Look on the Process list for processes whose names are indented one
space, and which have no entries in PID or most other columns except
for User Name, CPU, and CPU Time. These should be the 16 bit
processes running under NTVDM and one of them is probably the actual
culprit.

Good luck
