Bit Defender.
I sprinkle my hard drive with Eicar files and Bit Offender does NOT pick
up archived viruses. BD has been chucked.
I don't trust ClamAV because it's not updated often enough.
Unfortunately, supposedly the best in the world, "Kaspersky", needs IE
to run.
I also run chkrootkit and Rkhunter. Rkhunter being far superior. If you
read about "rootkit", it's kinda scary. "Re-install OS." Huh? Might as
well update to Mandriva 2006.

Yep, to me it looks like rootkits have the potential to totally ruin the
internet experience unless both MS and the Linux distros change their
code to prevent them. I'm pretty much settled on either Ubuntu or Suse
at this point. If I don't like either of them though, it will be easy to
reformat the drive and start over since it will be a Linux-dedicated
drive with no MS on it.

In self-defense, we're going to have to bite the bullet and discuss
non-free uninstallers here. Or many of us will pay dearly. What do you
think?

Richard

Hey Richard;

I'd say no. If there's a need for discussing uninstallers there are
other forums (ng's, email etc). As a matter of fact, I remember a
thread in acf about payware where the gent said something to the effect:

"I wasn't able to find freeware that fit the bill, so I had to go the
payware route. If anyone wants to know the details, contact me."

There's nothing wrong (in my book) with payware. It just gets back to
the old saw that this is a.c.*free*ware. I really don't come here
looking for payware discussions and you know how these things balloon,
once we open up the floodgates, we may as well change the ng name to
alt.compornotcomp.whateversonyourmind.

fwiw,
Craig
