MS antivirus update

G

GoodTime Barnie

I just wanted to look up a dns and did not type the good address for the
ripe whois. So I got a somewhat doubtful adult dating site at
www.ripe.org, and at the same time, an invitation from MS to update my
free MS antivirus (beta). The conincidence is troubling.

Did someone else here on the list get an invitation to update the MS
antivirus ?

Frank

Yes...update, and program now expires 7\31\06 instead of approx 30 days
from now. have program set to notify before updating. hope this helps

MS antivirus is still in beta, and only available to those that signed up
for it. Unless you actually volunteered and got accepted for the beta
testing program (which you surely should have remembered) there is no such
thing as an MS antivirus on your computer.

I wish there had been a warning with this post. I wish I'd never read
that first line.

As far as I can see, the WindowsOneCare beta program is only available to
US users. I have MS Antivirus which expires at the end of the year. There
seems to be no way to update or extend it (and I for one cannot remember
being "accepted" for it). If anyone knows a reliable and legal way to keep
this program running will they please post the URL.

Yeah, I totally forgot to Google that Word.

No, really. I have a comprehensive Dictionary, after reading such
mental deficiency at wikipedia.
In other words, that´s not English. Maybe Internetish :)

FYI, it also potheadish. "Tory Felcher", the combination of two bad
things (the brittish will understand the first part), is the name given
to a joint that's almost finished.

Microsoft would be better off if they stayed away from producing AV
software altogether. If they do follow through with this bad idea, they
will loose all credibility in my book.

Do they still have credibility to lose? I think that you are a very
generous man, John.

Actually, I read a short time ago that they'd acquired a European
antivirus company. I think that it was either Alwil or Grisoft. Maybe it
was a partnership of some sort. I get apprehensive about such marriages.
After all, IBM offered XyQuest a partnership in which IBM would market
XyWrite and inject capital into XyQuest to fund the move to the WYSIWYG
interface. The result of this was that XyQuest got trashed and I had to
abandon my all-time favorite word processor/publishing package. In
comparison, Word Perfect, Word, and FrameMaker are all sluggish agony to
use.

By the way, my signature file only got modified for clarification. As
for my killfile growing, I will always add somebody who calls me names
like "felcher boy" or the like to it. When somebody can't behave in a
civil fashion, I have no desire to waste my time communicating with them.

I appreciate your civility by the way.

I happen to agree with Azzman about these sig files. I automatically
read everything -- it's a habit. And, so, it's a real pain for me to
find a standard "essay" at the end of someone's posts. It's even worse
for me to find posts that begin, like:
"Joe Blow, while watching the smoke exit lazily from the hole at the top
of his teepee, posited,..."

These paragraphs do not serve any purpose. Communication is a two-way
street; there's someone at the other end.

Once or twice, ok. But after that, it's like being forced to endure some
mindless advertising that repeats endlessly while you're on hold with
tech support for a half hour.

I do that sort of thing all the time (the consequences bit). Thanks for
the apology. I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination but I
seem to end up at some turn off websites by accident. I was helping out
with a website once and read the 10,000 word (guessed that) FAQs which
happened to mention a website called something like goats.ex or
goats.cx. At the time I had a goat dairy and thought like a d***head, I
wonder what this is all about so off I toddled to visit it. Well! The
page I went to had nothing to do with goats whatsoever and I was grossed
out big time. 100 times worse than your link. Crikey I don't know what
makes some minds tick!!

Way OT here and will get abused
Cheers Azzman

Keith,
Wow! This is very nice. I wonder why they're an "unsigned" browser
plug-in though.

I like the way they handle legal issues with Microsoft:
_____________________________________
"As part of Microsofts terms and conditions, securlty updates for
Microsoft products can only be hosted at Microsoft.com. To comply with
their requirements (and we really don't want to host all that data),
updates to MS products are downloaded directly from
http://download.microsoft.com After you have done a windiz scan, and
chosen to install updates, you will be presented with a link to the
links page. If you wish to go to that page, it will show you the
download locations of each update that you have selected to install. You
do not need to proceed with downloading the updates."
_____________________________________
and this one:
_____________________________________
"According to the Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage, WGA should not
prevent you from installing Security Updates if you are using a pirated
copy of Windows. If we are asked by Microsoft to implement an equivalent
of WGA (or if it is supplied to us by MS), we will add it to the site,
and it will then become a requirement before the scan will be done.
WindizUpdate does not recommend the use of pirated Windows Operating
Systems or pirated word processing products. (We would rather you use
Linux and OpenOffice instead)"

Bookmarked until more people are using it. I can, however, see that this
has the potential to get real popular. Thanks for posting the link.

Well, I know it isn't Grisoft. I've seen several articles about it
acquiring a company named Sybari though.

Yes, this worried me so I went in with all defenses up, and scanned
everything afterwards. Nothing showed up at all, then or since.
