I don't have any sound since installing windows xp. Went to device manager
found out PCI Modem, Direct Memory Access Controller, Numeric Data Processor,
Programmable Interrupt Controller,System CMOS/real time clock, System,
speaker, System borad, System Timers no drivers are installed. I had sound
with windows 98. Tried using the disc for windows xp and doing add/remove
programs. Tried using old disc to see if I could re-install. Keeps saying
can't find it or there is a problem. Can anybody help me? Thanks so much.

Motherboard drivers, including those for peripherals that were sold with
the computer, are found on the cdroms that came with them. They are not,
as noted, present in the Windows XP cdrom. Install these device drivers
from the cdroms or diskettes that accompanied them.

If the manufacturer doesn't supply Windows XP compatible drivers, then
you won't be able to use that ancient PC with Windows XP.

Thank you for your post. I don't have much computer saavy. My son does all
this. One thing I did find that popped up was " Wizard can't find better
match for hardware than software that is currently installed" huh? I also
found a disc with a product key number and cd set numbers. I wll have to ask
my son but I wonder if it is 98, it has drivers but the names aren't the
same. Man I am so confused. Thank you all so much. Could someone help me by
explaining it in kindergarten english. lol.thanks a million.

You will need to visit the web site for the manufacturer of the hardware
you need the Windows XP drivers for. That means everything, the
motherboard, the video card, the sound card, etc. If you just stuck the
XP cd in the drive and installed it on a PC that came with Windows 98
factory installed, it's anybodys guess what will work.

Bob 1 Thank you so much for time and input into this. I really appreciate
it. Sounds like time to get my son to work on this.

If the motherboard manufacturer does not provide the required drivers
for Direct Memory Access Controller, Numeric Data Processor,
Programmable Interrupt Controller,System CMOS/real time clock, System,
System board and System Timers, you might be able to use the
"standard" chipset drivers. You can find the standard chipset drivers
for most VIA, Intel, nVidia, Ali and ATi(AMD) chipsets at their
respective web sites.

If it is at all possible, please post the make/model of the
motherboard here
