Sound Card Enabled but not started

Alas the time came to reformat my wife's computer, too many things did not
work as they were suppose to, so I gathered together all of the system discs
and backed it up, then I popped in a new harddrive to give her more space.
Everything went well until she came home and tried to listen to an email
audio note. No sound. I have tried everything I can think of to resolve
this problem. I have reinstalled the card many times from the system disc,
the Acer site and the SC company site, and have no where else to go. Please
read this completely and help me if you can. Here is the information from
msinfo32 on the sound device.MS XP Pro SP2

I have used the included system disc for my wife's travelMate2300, been to
both the Acer site and the conxant site to get updates. I have installed
them.I received an answer from a microsoft Vista tech after he read this and
he linked me to the same acer dowload I have already loaded.

Everytime it is the same thing. When I click on the properties it says
"enabled but not started"
The device manager says everything is fine. I have updated, disabled and
enabled.
I have gone to services and started the Widows Audio service
I have even tried removing fast detect in the boot.ini file as one post
suggested

Where do you start it? I have formated and installed hundreds of computers
as a high school computer tech and this is the first time I have ever had
audio problems. Usually it happens automatically.

Here is the system summary:

Something that is a bit peculiar, is the audio and modem may be sharing
a device.

The Intel Southbridge has an AC'97 audio device at 24C5, and a modem
device at 24C6. The Acer download page, has an audio download -

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_00641025

and the modem download has this in the INF -

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C6&SUBSYS_00641025

The subsystem hints that maybe the same device is used
for both ? Is it possible that the drivers have an
influence on one another ?

I tried to find the device on the Conexant site, but I
don't think they are too proud of any of their older stuff.

I went back to review how the thing is identified. It didn't occur to me
that the CODEC is actually not identified in the string, as in this -

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_00641025

The 8086-24C5 identifies a particular Intel Southbridge (the provider
of the AC'97 AC-link interface). The 1024-0064 number stands for "Acer"
and a particular instance of computing device. The AC'97 is not identified
as such.

I found a Conexant AC'97 datasheet, and the ID of the device is held in
two 16 bit registers. Three bytes hold the company initials "CXT". The
fourth byte holds a hex number, that presumably identifies 1 of 255
devices the company makes. (The CODEC on my motherboard is 0x4144 5375,
or ASCII "ADS" and 0x75 is the instance of CODEC made by Analog
Devices.)

I managed to find that info listed in the Everest "Report" generator
- hardware related pages. (After first finding it in device datasheets,
but not knowing how to get at it.)

http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

This isn't really that important, except that it says the usage of
an INF to identify the device, really isn't identifying the device
as such. The driver installs, based on matching the motherboard as much
as anything else. It means, potentially, the driver could fail at the
instant that it actually probes the device at runtime. A possibility
I hadn't considered before.

I was thinking another possibility, was you hadn't installed the
chipset drivers, but your IRQ entries seem to suggest you have done
that. So that probably isn't it.

Thanks Paul
I found your answer to be very in depth. I had loaded the chipset from the
system disc so I decided to use your link to the acer site to update the
chipset. Sorry to say that even though I reloaded the chispet and the audio
driver once again. Alas no change. I also reloaded the modum just in case
and everything remains the same.
I am still at a loss.
I do have to say that you got in a little over my head with some of your
details and I would like to know more. I can see what you are refering to
but I do not know what to do with the info.
thanks for the help

Did you install the sound driver, before or after SP2 ? The recommended
install order, would be "old WinXP install disc", SP2 service pack, then
chipset and sound driver. Did you perhaps install sound, then SP2 service
pack ?

That would not be an issue, if the WinXP disk was already at the SP2 level
to begin with.

About all you can work with, is what is seen in Device Manager, whether the
registry entries you see in the INF file of the installer, are present in
the registry, whether anything which is a startup service is starting,
and whatever error messages you can find. Are the files inside the installer
directory, being transferred to the system's folders ? And so on.

I couldn't find any help at Conexant, and the datasheet I found probably was
not intended to be public. In any case, it gives the impression that the
audio and modem sides of the chip, probably do not interact.
