USB Port Problem

B

Bill S

I am running Windows 98. The PC has two USB ports (USB 1.0
standard, I think).

One is connected to a printer and has caused no problems.
The other was connected to a scanner and had no problem.
We then attached an unpowered 4-way USB hub to this port.
This worked for eg compact flash card readers but the
scanner would not work as it had insufficient power. We
then attached a powered hub. This installed with
difficulty, but then did work OK.

For no obvious reason, about 2 months ago the scanner
would no longer work through the USB hub (the error
message suggested a disconnected cable). We checked
connections etc but no good; but connected the scanner to
another PC and it works OK. We tried to remove and re-
install the hub, but this did not work. We can now not get
anything to connect to the PC via this USB port neither
via either of the USB hubs nor a single item (eg a CF card
reader) connected directly to the port.

I have run the system file checker and one file
extrac32.exe was found to be corrupted or changed. I ried
to restore it but the system couldn't find the original
file to restore it from.

Using the system tools I checked the IRQs - these are
below. The things on IRQ 11 look suspicious, but I
wouldn't know how to change them. Grateful for any further
help you can give.

Bill
