Did you read all the EULA?

This free version will expire on 31st July 2005 or until a commercial
version is released, whichever comes first, without further warning. See
Terms 1 & 2 for Microsoft's words.

Also says ' We also may not release a commercial version of the
software.'

Substitute "not paranoid" for "innocent".

There are perhaps 100,000 very smart jo's out there, right now, watching
this program like with a suspicious eye. One slip, and MS will be in the
headlines or in court. I don't think MS would be stupid enough to load this
program with anything that's not kosher. Er... surely they wouldn't. :)

Hey, I may be wrong about this. If I am, I will come back and admit it.

If it turns out that the program is not spyware (or whatever you are worried
about), will you step up and admit you were wrong on this one? :)

I was not commenting at all on the program, which I am quite prepared to
concede might be the best ever.

I was commenting on the fact that money can buy the law. Money can buy
politicians and judges and can wholly intimidate the 'ordinary punter'
with it's power.

The two hippies that beat McDonalds might be the exception which proves
the rule. But they gave up their lives to do it; McDonalds just threw
some of their money at the problem.

I assume MS is worth more than McD. And have more intelligent
management.
And if they set out to break the law for whatever reason they will
factor a few trifling multi million pound fines into their cost benefit
analyses.

I don't feel particularly paranoid in respect of MS, but I would feel a
bit foolish not to acknowledge the power that such a monopoly can
exercise in the 'free market'.

I agree.

I hate to overanalyze, but MS knows we know that. MS is the party that
needs to be paranoid. Not that I trust MS or believe they are looking out
for my best interest. It's just that MS is on the defensive since the
lawsuits a couple of years back.

Are they?

Do monopolies do 'defensive'?

A defensive international bank?
A defensive international oil company?
A defensive international media conglomerate?
A defensive international software empire?

I don't think so.

YMMV.

This is the recently acquired program from Giant. Not sure if it's
going to be Freeware, but I would think so. Haven't tried it yet!

As with anything new, it's really prudent to totally backup your stuff
before you install. That being said, I downloaded and installed it, and
reached out for the updates, and tinkered around with the settings (don't
like anything auto-updating, rather click the buttons myself when I have
time to deal with the contingencies...) then ran it (on two machines) and
it found 4 items (mostly remnants) on one machine, and 2 items on the
other - which both Ad-aware SE Pro v1.05 and Webroot Spy Sweeper v3.5
have consistently missed. M$ *should* recognize those renegade dll's and
ocx's in their own system folders, ehh? Not like Webroot or Lavasoft want
to go ripping out a potential system file...

This Beta1 gives you an option to backup your settings, etc. before you
make any changes. Nice touch.

I think the GUI is a little gay, but other than than that, it's a pretty
neat deal for the price. Nothing difficult or sneaky that I could find.

Cheers.

Care to elaborate on "MS is on the defensive" ?

Agreed. Don't know if Giant or MS is responsible for the GUI, but I think
it's heavy and a little odd.

they?!

Well I did think that might be too obv., but then again, in teh
absence of MIME-Version, Content-Type, etc...

Well I don't have them anyway, innit? We've had this discussion
before... what am I running now?
Strewth.. "Last Modified - 24-Mar-1995 ".

Good eh? I think it is the first ever, the spalsh screen says: Beta
Trial Release...
Which OS are you running it on, quill and ink?

98SE. I bet it will run on anything, tho. Try it, it is only a matter of
unzipping it and running the exe; use it with the Germans because there
is probably an upper limit on the groups list - ie, it fell over when I
tried to load it with Clara's 60000.

I had a ghastly 'little britain' moment then...

But anyway... I couldn't get the X-Newsreader to the bottom like that
Erm, I forget.. Gerbil?
Nope

nfilter v2.xx Rev c3 wiv plugy bits?

Yep, but without whatever a 'plugy bit' is
You're actually happy wiv a spalsh screen?

Nope. But I'm not about to nip into the exe to find and bin it. A reason
I never went to A1.93 is that there is a button push hack for 1.91 that
loses the spalsh screen
kk.. Will test it later on this eve.

Hee hee

K etc
