Messenger voice problem

B

Bob

I can not get the voice in MSN messenger to work on this
pc. I have two other pcs that it works fine on. This one
has winXP Pro, the others have Win2000. It has an Audigy
2 ZS sound card with speaker and Mic connections in the
front and rear. I use the front connections for Word
dictation, and they work fine. I cannot get the Messenger
tuning wizard to recognize the mic in the front
connection. It sees it in the rear connection and sets up
OK, but I can not send out any voice from it. When I try
to send a voice message to a contact, the volume bar moves
as it should, but no voice goes out. Same problem with
the phone thru messenger with net2phone. This pc and one
other are hard wire connected to a router, the third pc
is connected to the same router wirelessly. The other
two, one wired and the other wireless, communicate fine.
I can receive voice on this one, but cannot send out
voice. I have the same problem if I try dial-up. Any
suggestions will be greatly appreciated; I have tried
everything I can think of. Thank You.

Greetings Bob,

Firstly, make sure both you and your contact have gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning
Wizard in Messenger. To do so, open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then
Audio Tuning Wizard, then go through the wizard to select and test your audio/video devices.

Then, both you and your contact should verify that the Windows XP Internet Connection
Firewall isn't on -- click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view
click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your
network/internet connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that
the Internet Connection Firewall is unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type
of third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that
Messenger is set to "Permit All", "Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).

If that's not the case, and if you or your contact are using a router (with UPnP support),
you may need to remove the current port forwardings. To do so, click Start, All Programs,
Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the "Internet Gateway" (should
be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties. Choose the Settings button,
click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close
Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.

Also, you and your contact might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so,
click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and
Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try
again.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply Jonathan.
Maybe I can simplify my problem description. I am using
xp pro with an Audigy 2 zs platinum card and AIW 9800 pro
video card that usually gets blamed for all problems.
I have a 3 pc lan with the other two running win2k. One
of the others is wireless, this one and one other are
hard wired. All communicate with other fine in all
respects except this xp one has voice problems. Messenger
text works fine between the 3.
Everything works fine on this pc except with Messenger.
The mic will not work with Messenger when plugged in to
the front connector, but works fine with other apps. It
will look like it works when connected to the rear
connector, the volume bar will rise and fall in response
to my voice when I make a voice message, but the sound is
not sent out. I have the same problem when using the
Messenger phone.
I have used the messenger audio/video wizards.
I have downloaded the latest Audigy drivers.
I downloaded DX9b.
I uninstalled 6.1 and downloaded 5.0 for xp. It was no
better, in fact it was worse in that as soon as a voice
request was accepted, the call ended. With 6.1, I can
make a voice call and hear the other party, but they can
not hear me.
I turned off the Qos packet.
I asked Microsoft for help, no answer.
I hope you can see something from these clues. I am
stumped!
Thanks again
Bob
