Liteware definition?

No! Haha.

It's really a personal call as to how the ware solves your problem. I
can see the group and PL having standards, but sheesh. Susan is
"making it so," and this would greatly complicate things to do it now.

Later on we can bounce ideas around. This one seems worth keeping in
mind and talking about.

Susan sure is doing a bunch of work. It would drive me nuts.
Perhaps this matter could be bounced around in a.c.f.d. at a later
time.
There will be alot of bouncing to be had :)
(BTW A big "Thank you!" to Susan.)

It's a valid point though. Many of these
"freeware" programs are indeed nagware.

that means quite allot of freeware nominated
must be re-classified to liteware.

Since you have such an interest in seeing that the job is done right I'm
sure you won't mind checking the Ware information that has been furnished.

if one takes a closer look one sees I reflect that allot of people may
not of understood the definition of liteware properly, not that the job
was not done right or wrong, I was not criticizing anyone, you looked at
it from a completely twisted angle its me who needs the flame jacket, lol

all freeware, that has a paid version with more features, will be
classified as liteware? even those products that are marked
(last available Freeware version) most will be liteware.

my guess is allot of people didnt see this clearly..like me."thats all!"

Help?? Help WORK?! I don't want to do work! I just wanna have a big
mega-thread and argue the abstracts for 50,000 posts. That's where
the fun is! Sheeeesh.

"your idea of fun is your own"

debating is healthy and most lead to improvements unless "one" shuts
their eyes, they could eliminate these abstracts now or in the future did
"you" think of that, no? perhaps you should go wash the dishes,
while we debate...

some freeware re-classified to "liteware"

Liteware: A stand alone program that can be used for it's intended purpose
indefinitely without additions, but has similar paid programs with more
bells and whistles.

Crippleware: A program which has limitations such that it could not
reasonablely be used for it's intended function.

Freeware: A program that is not only free, it has all available options
already included. No upgrade available.

costs zilch, monetarily. When I think "liteware", I think of an app
with all features, just less than the full-featured app but still free.
E.G., A full-featured Zone Alarm has all features as advertised for a
price. The liteware version of Zone Alarm would be with all features
but with say 50% usability. In other words, if ZA has 50 features in
the full version, then the lite version would be maybe 25, or half, of
the same features, nonetheless, the same features.

hi, I was just wondering about the liteware definition? Can ANY freeware
program that has a Paid or PRO version available with more features,
instantly be considered "liteware" like should zonealarm, adware, AVG,
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Firewall ,leechget, many more etc...
all be considered liteware?

with adware 6, I click on ad watch and it says, this feature requires the
licensed version to run? this is liteware. maybe even cripple ware?

leechget "free for non-commercial use" has limmited 8 simultaneous
downloads while the commercial version has unlimited simultaneous
downloads can this be considered liteware? even though 8 is plenty?

I couldn't find a really "clear" definition of liteware.

I use zonalarm, adware and leechget and I like them, just wondering?

so should all freeware, that has a paid version with more features,
all be classified as liteware?

I'm going to release a free professional edition of Babya
System(freeware)-basically bundled with a icon editor, and a folder security
app,and a image editor, and a MP3 encoder. It would not be labelled liteware

You are new and haven't even lurked much. Just earlier this very year, ACF
revisited a long debate about liteware vs crippleware, amongst other ware
definitions. This culminated in the highly satisfactory definitions as they
appear on the Priceware FAQ.

You not only were not here for the discussion, but have shown cause for one
to suspec that when you entered this subject -- it was without your having
bothered to read the FAQs.

It is not the season to launch an abstracted meta-debate. There is very
_specific work_ to do at hand, with classifying the PL candidates and
seeing that the processes related to voting culminate in a good PL list.

Not the least idea what "wash dishes" means.

[~500+ programs listed]

Wow, gee, What an effort. All that exhaustive labor. You must be really
tired, from all that detailed research.

(I'd propose that the feebleness of the effort might have something to do
with "washing dishes," if only I could get the most remote guess what in
heck that means.)

The Ware Glossary has definitions of the Ware types used in
Pricelessware descriptions.

http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/info2003PL.htm#Wares

If a program fits the description of Liteware the ware description for
the program should include this: (Liteware).

Since you have such an interest in seeing that the job is done right
I'm sure you won't mind checking the Ware information that has been
furnished.

Below is an alphabetical list of the nominated programs to date with
the current ware description. Please make sure that *all* pertinent
information is included: type(s) of ware, free for personal use, last
freeware version etc. etc.

Just note the needed revisions and post it to the newsgroup when you
are done. And thank you so much for helping.

Hmm How is 2.15 kerio considered liteware?

Aaron (my email is not munged!)

I don't make the rules and im not a expert on kerio, only tried it once,

but kerio 4 has many features that kerio 2.15 doesn't have,

any freeware, that has a "Paid" version with more features,
automatically is classified liteware, according to the rules.

if you nominated this product perhaps you could list the extra features
of kerio 4 compared to the free version in the descriptions thread

feel free to express any opinion you may have regarding this product
or the definition of liteware.

stan

I've taken the time to go through some of the ???wares, and come up with the
following interpretations from the information on respective website.
1-4a Rename (??? ware) Freeware.

4t Tray Minimizer (Liteware????)
Crippleware.
(Stores some options, i.e. Favorites, only for the current session in the
free version)
Freeware.

DirGraph
Freeware
Link to v.2.0 http://www.spillett.net/~dirgraph/
Freeware.
Freeware
(404 on webpage)
Freeware.
Freeware.
Correct name should be "EF Commander Free".
Liteware. ("EF Commander" is shareware)
Freeware.
Visual Thought is really "Abandonware".

--------------------------------------------

Now my lunch break is over, so I'll continue the search later... :)

On the discussion on ware-types I think, as most here, that the distinction
between "freeware", "liteware" and "crippleware" can become more or less
"fuzzy", and in most cases don't add any useful information about the
software in question.

However, other information is really more useful, which could bring up the
question on other ware-type distinctions:

- Free for all use
- Free for non-commercial use only

My personal opinion is that both categories are qualified for Pricelessware,
but for a small business this is more important information than if it is
"lite" or "crippled".

- Required runtime-libraries

Even if the software in itself is free, there could be some implications on
where and when it can be run. There are some examples that require
VB-runtimes, Java Runtime Engine (JRE), .NET Framework, or other
prerequisites.

Damn, you da' man! Can you come over and chop my firewood too, please?

I've been working hard, too. I downloaded the list. Then opened it up in
DBedit. Then I took a break, to go surf some websites. Then I came back
here and read some posts. Then I read yours....Found that best I can
do is repeat my 5-min labor all over again (update the DBedit view that
is hanging out in the rear corner of my open windows).

Seriously, Bjorn, thanks for putting in. Susan is miraculous, but she has
also indicated that she does not object to some help.

Totally agree, good points.

The VB runtimes, I think about all Windows users have them these days? It's
still nice to see the statement made prior to downloading, though

Java or .NET, I think the majority avoid program based on either of those,
at this time? If anything from there makes it to PL, hope to see it very
clear about that req.

Susan, this one seems to have changed hands again. The PL link:
http://www.jermar.com/wdrvbck.htm lands me at:
http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com/ (a redirection I guess).

"DriverGuide Toolkit:"

"Q: How much is DriverGuide Toolkit going to cost me?
A: DriverGuide Toolkit is shareware, and is FREE to download and try
for 2 days. The software may be purchased for only $19.95 U.S. -- this
is an introductory price that will expire soon, the regular price is
$29.95. There are discounts available for licensing multiple copies."

Shareware.

The dl link: http://www.jermar.com/wdrvbck1.exe is also redirected:
http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com/dgt.exe

I did not download it as it seems pretty clear it is no longer
freeware. I still wonder if this is the same cheesy guy at multiple
sites...

WordWeb (Freeware)

This one seems to be liteware:

"You can download a free version to try out. The free version does not
have the word list, search, anagram, or customization features."

ZoomPlayer (Freeware)

"Zoom Player Standard remains Free for Non-Commercial use, while Zoom
Player Professional comes in a Fully Functional (uncrippled) trial
version and requires registration ($19.95 U.S.)."

Liteware.

Zoner Draw 3 (Registerware: name/ email/ country)

"More: Here are some more reasons to buy Zoner Draw 4.
Zoner Draw 4 also includes several bonuses."

Version 3 still seems available as a full registerware version.

It is also liteware I suppose, as v4 has 5 applications, rather than
the 4 v3 has.

ZipScan (Freeware) (last available Freeware version)

Seems to have gone shareware. The PL dl link is a 404 for version 1.3.

"ZipScan FAQ
Purchasing
What do I get for purchasing a licence? You will be able to get the
full version of ZipScan. Each licence entitles you to run the program
on a single machine. If you want to run ZipScan on another computer,
you must purchase another licence. A licence entitles you to free
upgrades to all future versions of the program."

I have v1.3b:

Liteware, last freeware version.
