Liteware definition?

S

hi, I was just wondering about the liteware definition? Can ANY freeware
program that has a Paid or PRO version available with more features,
instantly be considered "liteware" like should zonealarm, adware, AVG,
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Firewall ,leechget, many more etc...
all be considered liteware?

with adware 6, I click on ad watch and it says, this feature requires the
licensed version to run? this is liteware. maybe even cripple ware?

leechget "free for non-commercial use" has limmited 8 simultaneous
downloads while the commercial version has unlimited simultaneous
downloads can this be considered liteware? even though 8 is plenty?

I couldn't find a really "clear" definition of liteware.

I use zonalarm, adware and leechget and I like them, just wondering?

so should all freeware, that has a paid version with more features,
all be classified as liteware?

Yep. (well, I'm not familiar with every program you mention, but any
app that has a payware big brother is liteware.)
with adware 6, I click on ad watch and it says, this feature
requires the licensed version to run? this is liteware. maybe even
cripple ware?

Yep. Whether or not liteware is 'crippled' is a judgement call,
based on how vital one thinks the missing features are. For me, most
liteware is crippleware.
leechget "free for non-commercial use" has limmited 8 simultaneous
downloads while the commercial version has unlimited simultaneous
downloads can this be considered liteware? even though 8 is
plenty?

It's still liteware, but if eight is plenty for you, I guess it's not
crippleware to you.
I couldn't find a really "clear" definition of liteware.

Yes.

This is a general guide. Perspective is much in this situation. If the
program does everything that you need it to do I would term it
freeware and the "big brother" bloatware myself.

I don't think that you will see any programs on PL that are not very
useful, regardless of other offerings by the author or company.

Adware and Spyware are out of bounds on PL.

I disagree. Is a free version of a program more limited than the payware
version? That's a simple factual matter. If it is more limited then it's
*either* Liteware *or* Crippleware. (Liteware vs. crippleware *is* a
subjective determination - one person's Liteware may be another person's
crippleware.)

http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/info2003PL.htm#Wares

Some PL2003 Liteware program descriptions say: (Freeware) (Lite version
of a Commercial program)

I was afaid people would not know what Liteware meant (it appears my
fears were justified).

We now have an on-site ware glossary as a reference - I will revise
these PL2003 descriptions from (Freeware) to (Liteware).

My flame suit is freeware but, since it's payware version actually protects
you from the flames, it is cripple ware,. but since it goes on you and has a
pay version, it is liteware. <gg>

That's what I meant by perspective. If it fits the bill it is neither
lite nor crippled for the purposes of freeware solutions. If it
"almost" solves the problem and the payware version would solve it
then I would consider it crippled.

Still, your definitions are correct. This is muchacho bookkeeping
though. I see WS_FTP LE up for correction then. This is a limited
edition available to select groups. The Pro version adds other
features, none of which is necessary (or even preferrable to me).

Jeez, you have so much going now. Maybe we can wait until the dust
settles and have a look for other programs that might should be
labeled lite or crippled. Hopefully there won't be many.

As per nominations, I'm sure if the nominators and seconders could
double check now it would be a great help to Susan. Or maybe Stan was
joshing? I don't know on many of these programs, so I don't know.

What's do you object to in the ACF definition?

I don't object to anything, not flaming either, lol

just wondering if ALL freeware that has a better PAID version
with more features should be classified as liteware?

if so then shouldn't, AVG , zonealarm, Agnitum Outpost Firewall,
Kerio firewall, and many more freeware nominations, currently classified
as freeware be changed to liteware? according to the FAQ.

also while ive got your attention,
may I suggest I would like to see in the description of the
program "Winners" how many votes a program actually got, perhaps
something like "example" 24/155 indicating that 24 people out of 155
voted for this program. it will help decide which is "pure" pricelessware
from programs that got 2 votes and are just a category fillers.

I agree. I hope most people noted the ware type when nominating, but
if not, we'll get 'em all sorted out.

If an app actually falls into the "crippled" category, I'd think it
would not garner many votes, though programs I consider crippled have
made the list in the past. I reckon they should just be noted as
liteware on the pricelessware.org site. Or, as Susan says, for
clarity, "lite version of a commercial program." I mean, what is the
point in calling something both priceless and crippled?

Edit Pad Lite is "liteware" and I don't need the added features of the

All software commercial or otherwise lacks something for someone.

The Ware Glossary has definitions of the Ware types used in
Pricelessware descriptions.

http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/info2003PL.htm#Wares

If a program fits the description of Liteware the ware description for
the program should include this: (Liteware).

Since you have such an interest in seeing that the job is done right I'm
sure you won't mind checking the Ware information that has been furnished.

Below is an alphabetical list of the nominated programs to date with the
current ware description. Please make sure that *all* pertinent
information is included: type(s) of ware, free for personal use, last
freeware version etc. etc.

Just note the needed revisions and post it to the newsgroup when you are
done. And thank you so much for helping.

Susan

But under the ambiguous definition of freeware it is.
Just redefine freeware with a few restrictions. Crippleware et al.
Edit Pad Lite is "liteware" and I don't need the added features of
the payware version.
All software commercial or otherwise lacks something for someone.

I've always just thought that crippleware was a "lite" version of
freeware with one or more "vital ingredients" limited or missing in
some way. IOW, the "vital ingredients" would be elements of the
program that limit it's *essential* purpose. Again, this I suppose is
a judgment call...but I'm not convinced that a consensus about most
programs could not be reached. Some folks tend to think of some
programs as crippleware if a certain "convenience" isn't included. Por
ejemplo...spell checkers in word processors. I don't think this is an
*essential* element in a word processor. If, however, said word
processor was limited to say...1000 words per file, *then* it would be
crippled.

Help?? Help WORK?! I don't want to do work! I just wanna have a big
mega-thread and argue the abstracts for 50,000 posts. That's where
the fun is! Sheeeesh.

Exactly. And more eloquently said.
Is this a call for a vote for a better definition of "freeware"
so-called?

No! Haha.

It's really a personal call as to how the ware solves your problem. I
can see the group and PL having standards, but sheesh. Susan is
"making it so," and this would greatly complicate things to do it now.

Later on we can bounce ideas around. This one seems worth keeping in
mind and talking about.
