Links not working

T

Tim Pears

Just lately I have noticed some problems with links
working. Sometimes the link will work, and sometimes it
will not. I have had particular problems with java
links, and have checked to make sure that it is enabled.
For the life of me, I can not figure out what is wrong.
I have tried to copy and paste the link into the address
bar, and it will open fine, but this will not work for
java type links. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try, in order:

1. (Re-)Installing 5.6 Scripting Engine from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

4a. IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing>Enable third-party browser
extensions (uncheck & reboot).

4b. Find the hijacker that caused 4a to be checked:

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. HijackThis (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the
preferred tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/
for expert analysis, not here.**

As part of the hunt, also update your virus definitions and then run a full
system scan. From now on, do both daily.

This seems to have fixed the problem. I did not have to
do all of them, when I got to the step that unchecked the
third party browser extensions it started working.
Hopefully that is the issue resolved. Thank you very
much. This has been a real pain in the butt.

I'm seeing this too -- seems lilke a virus is overwriting
the links with an old site name... right?

I believe I saw this recorded somewhere but can't rember
where -- it'e either spyware or adware run amok.

Let me know if find anything.
