javascript links on web pages won't work

L

Lee C.

Win XP (Pro) updates up to date (or, at least, they were; I reinstalled a ghost copy from a couple of months ago, but that didn't fix it either and so I assume this problem was there unnoticed when I ghosted the copy). IE6x updates were up to date too, I have since reinstalled IE6 SP1 and that didn't fix it either.

I've been using my WIN 2000 OS, but have decided that I'd do a clean reinstall of that and all my applications from scratch. So, I changed the boot sequence to default to the WIN XP and was going to make sure it was running right before I did the other over clean. Day or so into it I discover that it wouldn't open some java links.
For instance: it will ALWAYS open the "comments" sections on this blog page:
http://hammorabi.blogspot.com/ (An Iraqi blogger)
It will virtually never (some rare occasions) open the "comments" for this blog page:
http://messopotamian.blogspot.com/ (another Iraqi blogger). Both are java links.

I have added those sites to my "trusted" zone, added "www.haloscan.com" (where the java goes to) to my trusted zone, disabled my anti-virals to make sure they're not screwing with the javascripting somehow; I've gone back into the "internet options" and done the "allow" thing and turned on ("allowed") every conceivable thing I can think of that would relate to scripting OR java; I've cleaned out my \temp, \cookies, \TIF, and \history folders. I've reinstalled IE6 as I mentioned. And it just don't work. Once in a while I'll get them to open (other than the one I noticed that DID open and always does).

And, the wild cards in all this: On rare occasions I can get some of the other ones to work (other than the one that always works). When they do work, they mostly work, sometimes, some work and yet a few others don't work. But, next time I reboot, or even close and reopen IE6, it's on the fritz again.
And, it's not got to do with Haloscan; I've checked some java links on www.msn.com (two of them were supposed to move the pictures on a Mustang commercial back and forward--they read "javascript:flip(-1)" and "javascript:flip()"--neither of them worked either.)
And, here's the second wild card--I was hunting for indications, something to lead me to figure out what's up here, and I came across the following blog page.
http://www.pfhyper.com/weblog/2005/01/blog-games.html
It has a "comments" section that goes to Haloscan, but by an html link ("http://www.haloscan.com/comments/pfhyper/110530331932216098/"). That won't work either (most of the time). I checked the "source" (view source) for that page and the "target type" for that link was a "<script type="text/javascript">postCount('110530331932216098')", more java stuff--I can't read this, not literate, but more java stuff, that much I got figured out.
Okay, it's got something to do with java, I got that figured out, but I'm at a loss otherwise.

Anybody know what I ought to try?

If you have Java installed, uninstall it from the Add/Remove Programs
applet in Control Panel. Then get the latest version from:
http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp/

If you don't have Java installed, just install it from the above link.

Well that link don't work for me. I get the following message:
------------quote---------------------------
Not Found
The requested object does not exist on this server. The link you followed
is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let
you have it.
-----------end quote-----------------------
But, I think I've found what we need here: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010300.xml

This brings me to a question, if I may ask a follow up. I don't recall ever seeing Java explicitly listed in the Add/Remove on any of my WINDOWS OSs; that would include 98, 2000 (pro) and XP. I'd always assumed whatever java I needed was part and parcel of the WINDOWS OS itself. Now I have a separate Java installation. I noticed as it was going in that it called itself a "runtime" environment, and I remember running across "Windows Runtime" stuff before. Is this the Java equivalent of what used to work on its own (Windows Runtime) but don't now? Or what have I got here?

In any case, that didn't seem to improve things any, those java based links still don't open.

Well, see, that just tells ya how entirely lost I am when I get into this area. (Which is why I gave that long, boring explanation of what I'd done and discovered so far.)
What I do know is that the links that won't open regularly describe themselves as:

"javascript:[something or other]".

So, if that don't tell ya which I mean, then I'm gonna need a little further education on what this question asks.

1. You might want to refresh your scripting engine:

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

(WinXP users who have problems with 2a and 2b, see

It certainly does help if one has the sense to ask the right questions don't it?
1. You might want to refresh your scripting engine:

Got that and reinstalled it.
Sometimes there's a corrupt file in the cache and one must go to Tools |
Internet Options and click Delete Files.

Did this and then checked by hand and made sure all stuff was gone, then rebooted.
2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

A and B done.

Got all that done successfully.

Skipped # 4 as inapplicable.
5a. IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing>Enable third-party browser
extensions (uncheck & reboot).

5b. Find the hijacker that caused 5a to be checked (or if none were checked,
check for hijackware anyway):

Got 5a. and 5b. checked out, no problems there; this one was not really a concern for me (this stuff I do understand mostly).

Okay, I got to this part and was running down the list. Fairly down to the bottom; got to the part about "DirectX" and realized that I had put back an early ghosted copy of XP and it didn't have the new 9c DirectX; it had been ghosted before I put that in. So, I tinkered around a little bit and prompted it for a re-install of SP2 and the Service Pack 1 for IE6. (I'm on a DUN here and the downloads took all night). Reinstalled the service packs and, lo and behold!! Problem is fixed.

Thanks for the help folks, now I just gotta reinstall some of my tinkers.

It's a shame you had to go through everything else first.

I hate DUN. Recently my satellite connection broke (their fault this time)
and I had to use DUN for a while. Yechh!

Okay, problem's back; I reinstalled the "Net" framework (which I didn't have on the ghost copy) on this thing AFTER I'd put in the SP2 update, and it don't work again as soon as I rebooted.
So, I went back and discovered that they'd changed the Knowledge Base all around and I can't find anything there. And they've changed the updates page too, and it doesn't seem to have the option to reinstall stuff like the SP2 update.
I suppose I could download the full pack but that's like 266 megs over a DUN connection and will take all day and all night. (Besides I need to know this anyway.)

Quaere then: How does one get the WIN XP Service Pack 2 to reappear and reinstall from the AutoUpdate page?

Go to Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs. Make sure Show Updates (at

I figure there's gotta be a way to re-install it right over the top from the Update Center, but I'll worry 'bout that later. I sort of knew the other stuff (easiest is to just pull up my ghost copy and decline the hotfixes again and it'll prompt me to put in the SP2 again--but this time I put the Net Framework in FIRST!).
Thanks again guys.
