links stopped working

Links in MSIE stopped working. I think this happened after I installed SP2. I
have to use alternative browsers for links in messages to work. Website
links seem to work in MSIE. But links in newsletters, etc do not work. All I
see is a portion of the java code in the activity bar. Since links work in
other browsers but not MSIE, what is broken and how can I fix it?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Frank, I tried your directions. Changing the settings as you indicated does
activate the links in MSIE. But when I use another broswer as the default
browser, the settings then change back again and the links in MSIE stop
working. Can this not work in both browsers at the same time? The issue is
that certain files are opened with MSIE (such as MSN Messenger and Hotmail)
so links embedded in those messages do not work. Thanks for whatever ideas
you can offer. (Jack)

You can only have one default browser. If you want IE then find out how to
turn off the other browser's setting to make it the default.

Frank,

Then it seems that links in messages displayed by MSIE will not work unless
MSIE is the default browser. Even with another browser selected as the
default, MSIE still opens when I activate MSN Messenger to access Hotmail. Is
there a way to turn off MSIE so the alternative browser will handle MSN and
Hotmail connections?

Thanks for the help.

open regedit.exe and navigate to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
For Content Type it should say "image/gif"
