Know of a good MP3 editor?

Can anyone recommend a good (hopefully freeware) program for editing
MP3s? I am thinking of something like Exact Audio Copier, where you
get a graphical display of the file and can then manipulate the file.
I really need something that wil help me trim unwanted portions off
the end of the file, but functions like "fade in", "fade out" would
also be appreciated. I have a number of MP3 files that have DJ banter
at the end and I would like to get rid of this stuff. I am able to
cut the files up using Total Recorder, but it is a very imprecise
process and I'd like to take a look at the graphical display (the
soundwaves) so I can determine exactly where to make a cut.

Audacity is great. To select a portion of the file, click in the
waveform, then shift click in another spot.

You may also need to download the Lame MP3 encoder:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3

The only file you will need from the Lame package is lame_enc.dll, which
you locate in Audacity via File -> Preferences.

Try MP3 Direct Cut, I've never had a problem with it. Quite impressive
considering it's small (158K) size.

It is showing you - and letting you work on - the wave decoded from
wave. Once finished, the wave must be re-encoded to MP3. Same with
*any* wave editor such as Audacity, GoldWave, etc.

You want MPTrim
http://www.mptrim.com/

Free version works on files up to 7 minutes long.

No need to look at a wave form, you can either play a portion using
MP3Trim or play with Winamp, pause Winamp where you want the cut then
press MP3Trim's appropriate "W" (Winamp) button and it will grab the
pause point. Easy to fine tune in frame increments if needed.

And it is fast, no decoding/re encoding.
MP3 Direct Cut, the one you need

Exactly, I could convert it to a wav, edit it and then re-convert it
to MP3, but I would lose a lot of information in the process.

Less than you (and everyone else) think. But no matter, MPTrim doesn't
decode.
