Doofus-resistant MP3 editor

Not done this before, so looking for wise advice...

I have 3 MP3 tracks from which I need to take a couple of 30-second clips,
and I've been asked if I can make one of them fade out rather than abruptly
cut. Is there a small, simple and ideally free app which will do this for a
relative dunce?
