is there any way to embed the font into the page

People will not download that .. it will only annoy them. Look through many
previous posts on this subject. Make short bits of text into graphics, gifs
that is, and import them into your images folder before you place them on
the page.

so that they download it? without changing it to a graphic.
Not reliably. WEFT supposedly can, but it can be disabled (and usually
is) and only works in IE, and even then is usually flaky.

Also, do you have the right to distribute the font? (They are copyrighted.)

?

no not really...well sorta if they are using IE...but then again...
who's gonna download a font so that they can see your web page as you want them to see it? Read about WEFT.

Sort of but not really since IE and Netscape browsers don't use the same
protocol. Then you run into copyright problems. followed by the issue that
IE, Mac and Linux don't always support the same font types. Even if you
overcome those issues, your odds of getting a visitor to download and
install a font just to visit your webpage are slim. Too many viruses,
trojans, and other nastiest on the net that make people leery of downloading
extraneous objects.

I have never downloaded a single font even though a few sites have asked me
to.

There are several new ways evolving to do such things, but they are still
'beta' quality. Both are based on an 'image replacement technique' - see,
for example these links for "sIFR" methods:

http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2004/08/sifr

or here -

http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/dreamweaver/articles/sifr_demo.html

or for "TIP" methods, see here:

http://www.tjkdesign.com/articles/tip.asp

The latter is a quite interesting method.

DISCLAIMER: I have not use either commercially.

Print houses have to have the font installed on their system as well. WEFT, if I recall will not let
you use a font that has been set by it maker as restricted.

I think all fonts have that ability to restrict embedding. Yes, print houses have to have the font installed but if they don't have it, they will ask for you to include it with the files. I'm just kinda curious abt the legal aspect of it all...thought Cheryl would have some insight. I love copyright/trademark laws.

When I worked in a graphic organization and we sent our print files, the print house had to have a
license/installed version of every font that we used, so both the company and each print house that
we used, had to have the complete library of Adobe fonts installed.

Thanks to all of you for such informative replies. Coming from print design
to web design is quite a transition.

My client paid for use of the fonts she purchased them for a CD cover and
Promo materials. When I send a doc to print I send the font in the PDF file.
As she has paid for it already why would the printer also have to buy it? I
am also using the fonts in graphics I made for her sites.

I didn't think the download font was good idea so my work around was to use
the desired font on a custom button, thereby changing to a graphic. I was
concerned about download times for all the graphics.

If I can't have her first choice of fonts in the body text, I prefer users
to see Arial, not Times New Roman, I have it set to default to Arial. I
think Mac computer users may not see that? What is a good default font for
Mac users? I think I can specify that in the theme area?
(arial:tahoma;MACFONT)

I have used themes but totally redesigned the graphics. FP is a lot simpler
to learn than Dreamweaver and MM Flash.
I used Photoshop and Image Ready to make the animation and re-do the buttons
in my colors.

I am learning a lot reading this NG, it's a great group!! thanks especially
to the MS MVP's who have answered my noob questions.

These are the sites I made so far with FP:
http://d529182.u33.infinology.net/NewSC/index.html (still being revised,
almost ready, any critiques welcomed, I know about the broken "lyrics" link
and some form validation errors, do you think the opening animation is too
large file? what font do you see?)

www.laurabradley.com (site is completed and running, client loves it)

K

KatWoman

thanks for the links Murray... very interesting ideas. I will wait on using
that until it's out of "beta" and I get more experience in using .css.
I guess I'm not the only graphic designer who would love to use more custom
fonts.

T

Tom Pepper Willett

Helvetica is the equiv. of Arial for MAC.

BTW, setting the default font in Arial in FP only shows in the design mode,
it does not show on the web. You would need to set your font by highlighting
the text and change the font properties to Arial, Helvetica .. or use CSS.

I was concerned about download times for all the graphics.

A worthy concern. You should also be concerned about removing what may be
extremely good 'spider food' from your page's content, thereby potentially
affecting your search engine ranking.
I have it set to default to Arial. I think Mac computer users may not see
that?

It's best to use a family of fonts, e.g., arial, helvetica, sans-serif,
rather than a single font specification. This one will catch those Macs
that do not have Arial....

K

KatWoman

You should also be concerned about removing what may be
extremely good 'spider food' from your page's content, thereby potentially
affecting your search engine ranking.

what exactly should I remove? I have a script to prevent email harvesting I
was going to add.
I purposely loaded the description and metatags with a lot of 'search words"
I don't think that's what you meant. Why would that affect my search engine
ratings badly, I thought it would help people find it better.

Thomas A. Rowe

Does the license for the font allow for the font to be installed on other computers? When a font is
embedded in a PDF, it is not installed on the user's machine that is viewing the PDF, however for
fonts to be viewed on a web page, then must be first downloaded and then installed onto the user's
PC that is viewing the page with them unless the user already has the font installed.

Most (all?) search engines ignore meta tag content vis-a-vis page ranking,
since you can say anything you want in those tags without regard for the
page's actual content. By migrating page content away from text (i.e.,
spider-readable) to graphics (i.e., spider-opaque), you have effectively
removed that content from the page, hence removed it from any page ranking
consideration. See what I mean?

K

KatWoman

I would say No I don't think the license would allow the font to be
downloaded from the website as I would then be distributing it for free.
But I my client bought it to use it for promo materials and that would
include the graphics on the website, they are not downloadable as a font. I
can not find any documentation of the rights anywhere in the file.

I only use PDF for actual printing of her pieces, I have no way of knowing
if the print shop installs the font or just uses what is inside the PDF. I
have not used PDF docs on any websites so far.

I am happy with the look of the main layout now and will just have to settle
for the body text to be whatever it will be for the viewer.

For better search results:
Do you think I should put some hidden text into the body of the HOME page? I
can type some black on black that the viewer cannot see? is there another
way that would be better?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

As long as you are creating a graphic, there is no issue with licensing.

"For better search results:

The search engines a long time ago caught on to the hidden text trick, and
consider it "spamming" the search engines. They know how to catch it, and
you will be delisted for using it.

The major search engines rely on the text in the body that they can see.
That's how the searches are generated. They rely very little, if at all, on
keywords in metatags. And, if they do use them, the keywords must match the
words you have in the text of your page.
