Embedded Fonts?

I was under the impression that there was a way to embed fonts in a page or
website that may not be installed on a viewers computer. For my company, I
have chosen "Resevoir Grunge" for our logo (replacing Boulder, which I can't
find anywhere anymore). This font is also not common (apparently), but it
suits us, and the default, Times New Roman, just doesn't make it. How can I
embed the Resevoir Grunge into my pages? Is it possible? I can't find any
information on doing this, now that I want to!

You can embed fonts, but only for Internet Explorer users. What you want is
the Windows Embedded Font Tool (WEFT) at:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/WEFT.mspx

Note: This will not work for anyone that uses FireFox, Netscape Navigator,
Mozilla, or Opera. If you can avoid using a non-standard font it's best to
not to use it. Embedded fonts will increase the page load time, and can make
it more difficult for an average user to read since they are used to seeing
certain fonts all the time. Not to mention the page may not always look as
you intend for various users that may have features turned off that would
disable the embedded fonts.

Non-standard fonts can be used effectively in graphics on the web, but are
really difficult for the general body of text.

Hope this helps,

As I wrote 3 days ago, when someone else asked the same basic question:
You can't. Don't try. Use web safe fonts.

There is a program called WEFT that purports to embed the fonts, but
(1) it only works in IE (when it works - which isn't often), and (2)
it still requires the viewer to download the font. Most people will
NOT want to download a font just to see your web site (takes time,
uses space on their machine, and is a security risk). They'll go
elsewhere. Since you WANT people to view your pages, don't do things
to force them elsewhere.

As others said, if you MUST use a special font for specific text, like a
banner or heading, convert it to an image.

Thanks, Mark:
I was only interested in using it for our company name at the top of my
pages (logo), because it's the type style that we had chosen long ago, before
we were on the web; i.e., on our business cards etc. Actually, as I said, we
had chosen Boulder, but can't find that anymore. The Resevoir Grunge (I
don't even know which program installed it on my computer) has a similar
look, so we like it. I think I'll take Thomas's advice and make a graphic
out of it, which I had thougt of doing before. That seems to be the way to
go. Thanks again.

Thanks Thomas. Sounds like a good idea, one which I had thought of, but I'm
not real sure how to do it (make an image out of it).

If it's just for the logo, make it a bit map file and insert just like
a jpg file.

This was discussed thoroughly last week. Look at previous posts. That's a
very often asked question. Learn to make font-gifs in a program such as
Fireworks for titles and headings etc.
