Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express Malfunctioning

Operating System: Windows XP (Home Edition)

Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express are
malfunctioning. The error message, "IE has encountered a
problem and need to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." has been popping up with increased
frequency, seriously disrupting normal computer
functions. According to Microsoft, the remedy requires
removing the BHO, WurldMedia from one's computer. Using
a couple of spyware removal programs, I have done just
that. Still, the problem persists. In fact, at Outlook
Express, the problem has intensified. Clicking on
certain e-mail links in OE will generate the "IE has
encountered a problem." message with 100% certainty.
Can anyone explain exactly what has gone wrong with
Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express and what needs to
be done to correct these malfunctions permanently? Any
help you can provide will be genuinely appreciated.

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. Best to run such applications with all other programs closed or
after rebooting into Safe Mode.

HijackThis (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred
tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ for
expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

This Newsgroup/Posting system of communication is
relatively new and strange to me. I have simply jumped
in with the hope that my participation will somehow fit
in with acceptable procedures and practices. Special
thanks to "PA Bear" and "Mike Burgess" for so promptly
responding to my request for help regarding the
malfunctioning Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express.
Also, thanks to Craig and David for contacting me by e-
mail. By no stretch of the imagination do I consider
myself to be a proficient computer technician.
Nevertheless, despite my limited technical capabilities,
I am making every effort to follow all potential
remedies, to the extent possible. While my computer
skills may not be what they should be, ordinarily, I am
pretty good at following instructions, particularly when
those instructions are precise and unambiguous. Although
the error message (crash), "IE has encountered a problem
and needs to close," continues to drive me crazy, the
problem may be diminishing. It's hard to tell, because
I'm not always online. However, if I stay on long
enough, sooner or later, IE will crash, for no obvious
reason, with the same error message, "IE has encountered
a problem." Everything in my cyberspace arsenal that can
be deployed has been deployed, including Ad-Aware, Spybot
and SpywareBlaster. For Spybot and SpywareBlaster, as
advised, I have requested updates before proceeding.
Admittedly, I don't know exactly what I'm doing. But, if
fixes are recommended, I will usually accept those
recommended fixes.

Just skimming over the huge number of posted messages
describing problems and complaints with IE6 and OE
suggests to me, a nontechnical person, that something is
fundamentally wrong with the way IE6 and OE function.
Right now, I'm considering trying Mozilla or Opera as
reasonable alternatives to IE6. Based on published
evaluations, most computer experts seem to believe that
the Mozilla and Opera browsers are superior to IE6.

Again, thanks "PA" and "Mike" for your suggestions. I am
going to post this message twice, once for "PA" and once
for "Mike." I don't know if that is the right thing to
do, but, it can't hurt.

Best wishes for the holidays and Happy New Year to all!
