IE6 won't keep toolbar settings on reboot, Windows XP

Greg

Whenever I reboot my pc and run IE, it keeps defaulting
to a toolbar choice that I don't want. Example: In the
toolbar on/off menu, my choices are STANDARD BUTTONS,
ADDRESS BAR, LINKS, HP VIEW, NORTON ANTI-VIRUS, PANICWARE
POP UP STOPPER PRO and GOOGLE toolbars. I turn off
LINKS, HP VIEW, NORTON ANTI-VIRUS, and turn on STANDARD
BUTTONS, ADDRESS BAR, POP UP STOPPER PRO and GOOGLE
toolbars. I then arrange the toolbars in the desired
locations, and then lock them. Whenever I have to reboot
for whatever reason and run IE again, my toolbar settings
are gone, and it defaults to STANDARD BUTTONS, ADDRESS
BAR, LINKS, HP VIEW, and GOOGLE.

I'm using Windows XP, IE6

Try running this little program:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/ToolbarRepair.Exe
This little app should repair the registry entries that have become fouled
up.

Or, manually, courtesy of Doug Knox, MVP:

Close any open Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

There are 3 sub keys: Explorer, ShellBrowser, WebBrowser

In each of these sub-keys is the entry for ITBarLayout

For IE Toolbars: The WebBrowser Sub-key directly affects IE.
For Windows Explorer Toolbars: The Explorer Sub-key directly affects
Explorer.
The ShellBrowser sub-key may affect IE as well. Its effect on IE and
Windows Explorer is unknown at this time, so if the first option doesn't
work, delete the ITBarLayout value here as well.

Choose the relevant sub-key and right click where it says ITBarLayout and
select Delete.

The deleted value will automatically be recreated for you.

You may want to right click on the main key (above) and select Export. This
will allow you to backup the contents of the whole key, including subkeys.

Start..run..msconfig...startup tab and uncheck AUTOTKIT. Your settings
should stay then.

As Jon said. In addition, you need to disable the program named AutoTKit
from startup. (in Compaq/HP systems)

If this does not help, download the fix from HP [Only for HP computers with
Windows XP]

Customized View Settings on the Internet Explorer Toolbar Revert to Default
Settings After Restarting the Computer
