Toolbar Settings Lost After Reboot

D

Doug V

Every time I reboot my computer the toolbar layout and
button sizes revert to the same layout, even though I
changed them before shutting down. The Standard Buttons
bar always reverts to large icons and the Links toolbar is
off to the right. When I change the settings to small
icons and relocate the Links bar, the setting changes are
maintained during the current session, but are lost upon
reboot. Any ideas?

I did have a problem with spyware that added toolbars at
one point, but I believe I have cleaned these up with
Spybot and HijackThis. Could this be a residual effect?

Thanks.

Doug V.

Not sure if this will work, but have you tried View-
Toolbar-Lock Toolbars before rebooting. I have mine
locked and don't seem to have a problem with resetting.

Doug V

Locking the toolbar had no effect. After rebooting, the
toolbars were locked, but they were locked to the old
settings, not the new ones.

I am also having the same exact issue. I just bought a
brand new computer from Hewlett-Packard XP Professional
last week and booted it up for the first time. With out
any additional software loaded it had this problem. I
spent over two hours on the phone with hp's support and
did not get anywhere. I have reloaded the recovery CD's
and still no fix. Locking the toolbar did not fix it.
I went into the registry and tried locking the Toolbars
manually but not effect. It would be nice to find out
what the issue is......Thanks

For the record, I am running IE 6.0.2800.1106IC SP1, with
all the latest fixes on Windows 98, so whatever is causing
this appears to occur on both XP and 98.

I had the same problem. My PC was an HP. It ran a file
called C:/hp/bin/autotkit.exe at start-up which brought
back the toolbars to their default settings.

If you have an HP try the following:

click on Start and the Run.

type msconfig and hit enter.

under the Advanced tab uncheck the box next to autotkit

click on Apply and then OK

Reboot

The setting should now stick.

I too have an H-P and the same problem. This worked but
my PC now boots in diagnostic mode, no biggie, it doesn't
seem to run any differently.

Does anyone know what Autokit.exe does? I called H-P and
they had no idea.
