IE6 hangs with Adobe Flash plugin

G

Guest

Hi,

having major problems with flash content on webpages running on Win2000.
IE6 (and Firefox also for that matter) hangs if and when webpages with
flash-content are loaded. However, IE6 does not hang immediately, but only
after I all browser windows are closed, leaving the process hanging in
taskmanager. Any new attempts to load IE6 are futile (FF behaves the same).

Subsequently I'm also unable to shut down the computer, without doing a hard
shutdown via the power button. Trying to kill the IEXPLORER.EXE task freezes
the entire computer.

Uninstalling the flash plugin alleviates the problem, but I'm left with a
meager webexperience.

Any ideas?

By the way, I've tried unistalling Flash with the uninstaller provided by
Adobe and then reinstall the plugin, but it does not help.

First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
How to manage Add-Ons:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256

2... You need to be sure your system is clean from malware and Viruses by
scanning for them
Scan for malware from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D

Open a run command and type in:
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 Cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
Reboot your computer and see if there is any success.
Download the Hijackthis and send the report to one of many
forums for analysis and troubleshooting:
http://www.merijn.org/index.php
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post
your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,

forums for expert analysis, not here.

Nass, thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately, none of these quick and,may I say, general fixes have helped.
Not even a clean install of the OS helped, still same problem "fresh out of
the box."

Hi,

I'm using F-Secure Client Security.
Memory is not a problem, 1Gb should be adequate.

And yes, the problem still occurs after a clean install of Win2000 with the
appropriate updates.

No matter whether I make an manual install of Adobe Flash Player or let the
browser do an automatic update, the problem always occurs.

I've been wondering whether the security client can have an affect on the
problem at hand, but it's definately Flash-content that crashes the browser
when it is shut down.
