IE will not go to website but I can ping them

I have a winxp setup and for some reason I cannot access the internet using
IE but I can ping sites using the ping command in a dos box.

Whenever I open IE I get res:shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

Any ideas on how to fix this?

You need to refine your symptom description first.
What you want to know is can you detect an open port 80
using that name. Try using telnet 80 instead.
If the screen clears you can try typing GET /
(That's GET<space><slash><Enter>.)

Another proof that you have connectivity to that server
would be that you can use a different browser there.
