I have a 98 computer running on a 2000 domain network. I just updated the
computer with the latest updates, it has not been done for some time, and
cleaned out the system using System Mechanic. During the Sys. Mech. cleanup
I came across many registry entries that appeared to be either Trojans, back
doors and ad/spyware. After the cleanup IE would not connect to the
Internet. The settings are all corrected, i.e DNS, WINS, IP etc. and I did
confirm this. I can also ping outside sites from a DOS prompt like Yahoo,
Google.
I figured that something for IE is causing this problem and can't figure out
how to solve it. When I open IE I get the usual “Can’t find server or DNS
error†page. However, I know that DNS is not the problem. At least not up
front anyway.
How do I go about correcting this issue? I was going to try and reinstall
IE, but since I can't get to the Internet, that doesn't seem to work.
My next step is to try and reinstall the service packs for 98 and IE 6.
However, I am curious if anyone has seen this before or a better idea. Can
ad/spyware or an old Trojan leave a setting in IE that if it is not present
will cause IE not to work?
Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed.
Thank you in advance.
