Hi Bald Eagle :)

Try start here and see if it helps:

With IE open, go to Tools > Options > Advanced. Click on the Restore
Defaults button. Click OK. Reboot the computer.

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q175722/
or
try this: WinSock XP Fix 1.2 or this: LSP-Fix

also, try the infomation here:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Hope this helps.

Jan,

Thanks for the tips... My IE is back to normal. I tried the basic
diagnostics before I posted this question. Didn't work. Then, your winsock
suggestion got me thinking.... and I tried this simple command at the command
line:

netsh winsock reset

Everything worked from that point onwards. So basically it was a Winsock2
corruption (since I am using XP Pro and IE6). The article I had looked at was
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259.

Thanks again,
Regards
