Internet Explorer will only connect to secure sites

Internet Explorer will only connect to secure sites i.e. those that begin
with https not http. Those sites that appear in bookmarks with the padlock
symbol will connect. Those without the padlock symbol or http sites will not
connect and result in the standard error message "can not find or open
server". Would appreciate any ideas. I have tried reseting security settings
to default but it did not help. Looking for a solution less drastic than
renameing IE registry files and reinstalling Windows XP. Thanks

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

Thanks for your help. Ran AdAware. Found some items and eliminated them but
it did not correct the problem. Ran HighJackThis, didn't see anything unusual
but I posted log to AUMHA FORUMS. Waiting to hear if anyone else sees
anything unusual. Open to suggestions. If no answers, I guess I will try to
reinstall IE.

Well I think the system is too far over the edge. I tried to uninstall the
earthlink software through the XP uninstall function. The system will not
uninstall it. Called Earthlink Support (still a member for dial-up). Got a
phone message that they can not provide support at this time because all
their computers down and support personnel have no access. Will wait for them
to get back up or format hard drive and start over.
