I E 6 does not open more than one window regardless of what I do

Folks,

Mark(?) posted a similar problem on 11/22 under the title "IE stopped
spawning windows properly"
I appended that I am having a similar problem.

More specifically, I cannot have IE 6 open a new window, either by selecting
the series: file>new>window, or clicking a hot link in the ie window, or
right clicking the hotlink and selecting >open in new window.

The result for all the above is that the new page opens in the current IE 6
window--overlaying whatever is there, and losing track of all previous
avtivity (the BACK button does not show the previous page (as if the new
window was starting from scratch).

I tried the remedies for looking at urlmon.dll etc. from publication Q281679
with no success--everything seemed to be properly installed.

Can you recommend something else?

Thanks!

Hi Val :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab>uncheck 'reuse windows for launching
shortcuts'

or..........

Run each of the following from start/run:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

and........

To keep more than one browser window open at a time, click File in the main
menu, select New, then Window. To close a browser window, click the X in the
top right-hand corner or select Close from the File menu. You can also open
a new browser window with Ctrl+N.

Try these steps:
Open IE, tools, internet options.
Select Advanced tab and click the [restore defaults] button.
Later, select the Programs and click the [reset web settings] button.
Click OK.

And...

You may have a program running which is blocking pop-up windows-
something like Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, a firewall, Earthlink (or
another) pop-up blocker, etc. You'll have to uninstall the program or turn
off the feature that's blocking new windows.

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

Hope this helps

Jan I :)

Thanks for responding to my question.

I tried many of the solutions provided, but was not successful.

I took the opportunity to clean up stuff I no longer used which help speed
the computer's performance and experimented with some settings along the
lines of the recommendations.I found that "removing the check mark in the setting in I E>tools>internet
options>advanced(tab)>[]Enable third-party browser extensions", worked!!!

I was using panicware pop-up blocker and the set-up instructions asked to
check this setting.
Thanks again!! :)

If that worked your machine is infested with spyware or adware.
First eliminate any scumware and then recheck the option.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
