HTTP 404 - file not found error

Operating Windows XP Home with all service paks. If I
type a URL in any search (MSN/Yahoo, I receive a HTTP
404 - file not found error, however, if I type a specific
web site into the address bar, the site appears without
incident. Please help and tell me why I receive this
error message only when utilizing the search option?
