How do I upgrade from Windows 98

I want to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows 2000
Professional. I know someone who will install it for me.
Windows 98 came with my computer so I believe I have that
license. How do I go about getting windows 2000 without
paying for a whole new OS? Do I have to take off the
Windows 98 license attached to the computer to some store?

How long do I have to wait before disaster strikes? I upgraded on 04/28/2003. It's been as solid as a rock, even with SP4.

You have been lucky. Upgrades in general can inherit the old problems with
the previous version.
Disaster is an exaggeration, usually. but clean installs are desirable
because for both preformance, and stability reasons.
