Home Network with XPHome and 98SE

B

Bob Schilling!

I have a new XP Home PC and an older W98SE PC both on a
802.11g wireless router. A cable modem is plugged into
the router and so each PC can access the internet via the
router independent of the other. I have the PC's set-up
in the same workgroup.
The W98SE can see the XPHome and its resources. I have a
printer connected on the XPHome that I can access on the
W98SE. I have been able to transfer files from the W98SE
to the XPHome. However, the XPHome sees the workgroup
but does NOT see the W98SE ! What's up here? How can
I resolve this to address files sharing the other way and
gaming?

Bob,

Do you have any firewalls (ICF or third party) on either computer? Ensure that
the following ports are open in any firewall for file sharing: TCP 139, 445; UDP
137, 138, 445. If wireless, try and restrict the open ports to the Local Zone
(other computer).

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Make sure that file and printer sharing is enabled on W98SE and that
W98SE can see itself in Network Neighborhood.

I have a similar situation as above, and the W98SE machine cannot see
itself. This is a new wired network using a DLink DI 604. Both can get
online thru this router.

What do I check now?

Thanks
