XP Host can't see network

S

Sospiri

Until a few days ago I had a home network comprising an XP host
connected to a Win98SE macine via a Linksys 5-port Workgroup hub. The
Xp connected to the internet via 56K dialup and shared this, files and
printer with the w98SE machine.

A few days ago we got 384k ADSL via a SpeedTouch 530 USB Modem. After
some time spent on the phone to our Greek telephone company support
line, the XP machine could access the net and access the W98SE machine
via the network but the W98SE machine could not access the internet.

After trying many so called "solutions", the network is "broken" and
the XP machine can access the internet but not the network. Trying to
repair the IP address via the inbuilt XP utility fails and it just sits
with its LED flashing away on the hub.

Meanwhile the W98SE machine can't see its XP host and just comes up
with a message to the effect that DHCP isn't issuing an IP address.

The problem appears to be on the XP side and values are as follows:-

Physical address: 00-04-5A-66-87-23
IP Address: 169.254.112.93
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway: blank
DNS Server: blank
WINS server: blank

I've reinstalled both XP and W98SE without any noticeable difference.
I've removed the ADSL connections and tried to get the network
reinstalled also to no avail. Where do I go from here please? Right now
I just wish that I'd stayed with dialup!!!

OK, this should be fun.

Guessing by "XP host" you are saying that you have attached the USB modem to the
XP computer, I suggest that you read my article on using a crossover cable (you
are using a crossover cable, to connect the XP and 98 computers?).

Please read each article, and linked articles. I think that will get you
started. Let me know what the Greek telephone company support folks told you,
that contradicts my suggestions.

If I understand correctly, the DSL modem connects to the XP computer
via USB, and the two computers connect to each other via the 5-port
hub and Ethernet.

If that's right, the solution is to enable Internet Connection Sharing
on the host computer. I've written a web page with details:

Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing

Hi gentlemen,

Yes, Steve, you have the topography of the machines spot on!

My grateful thanks first to Chuck. We are almost there and the thing
that seemed to do it was "netsh winsock reset catalog".

I say "almost there" because

1. The XP machine sees the W98SE and can access any of the
directories/files that I have made available to it - no problems there!

2. The W98SE machine can see the XP machine and can share its printer.

The bit that is not working is that W98SE can see XP's Shared Documents
folder but I get "Access Denied" when I actually try to access it.
There are several files and sub-directories within Shared Documents
which, before all this ADSL debacle, were accessible but are not now.

Yes, Steve, I had much earlier read and printed out your excellent
pages and I HAVE said yes to file and printer sharing. Any thoughts?

Finally, I still cannot access the internet via ADSL, which was the
original problem!

Looking forward to receiving your further assistance gentlemen!

All the best,
Sospiri

Cheers Chuck, file sharing is now working properly. All I'm left with
now is the ADSL internet connection which may be a matter of
permissions or may be something else.

Finally everything is working!!!!
The ADSL problem was a hangover from when I managed to get part of the
ADSL services working via a proxy. Turned that off and, hey presto,
web, ftp & email all work through the ADSL shared service.
Many thanks for your all your help, Chuck.
