Home Network Problem

Hi all,

I have 2 computers that I'm trying to network using a switch. Both computers
are running Xp Pro. I have tried to run the wizard and hard coding the IP
address. Both have the same type of network work cards. I’ve shared out the
files on both computers. I've tried turning the firewall off but no luck.

On comp1 when I go to network neighborhood I can see both comp1 and 2. But
when I try to access comp2 I get an error that I don’t have access to the
files.

On comp2 when I go to network neighborhood all I see is the workgroup. When
I click on the workgroup I get the same error about the files not being
shared. I never see either computer in network neighborhood.

Like I said I’ve shared out the files on both computers.

Anyone have any idea what I’m doing wrong.

Thanks,

Paul Scott

Create user accounts and passwords on each machine that are identical.
Turn the firewall back on and configure it to allow file/printer
sharing on the lan.

Paul,

As Malke says, start by making sure file sharing accounts are setup, and make
sure there are no problem / overlooked firewalls.

Check registry setting restrictanonymous.

Check for browser conflicts.

If no help yet, post output from "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" for both
computers, and we'll diagnose the problem.

A thought before proceeding with the good info from Chuck -

If the two XP Pro computers are in a workgroup, they are probably set to use
simple file sharing by default. If that's the case, sharing uses the guest
account and matching users and passwords aren't an issue. You can check
this under Control Panel / Folder Options / View Use Simple File Sharing.
The guest account needs to be enabled on both machines. Running the command
net user guest /active:yes will make sure.
