HELP! wuauclt.exe WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE

I posted in a previous thread about how the damn windows update icon won't
stop trying to download the XP Service Pack. It's at 55% and has been
appearing for several days now. I went in and told it to notify me but not
update or download from now on. I even turned my computer off after that.
But NOW when I manually shut down wuauclt.exe through CTRL-ALT-DELETE and
the Processes list, it just comes back! The damn thing is worse than
spyware! How do I tell my windows update to stop it, STOP IT RIGHT NOW and
not to show up again until I tell it to? The damn thing lags my entire
computer. I've defragged, compacted, done just about everything possible to
free up space on the system. I'm thinking of opening up my computer and
cleaning the fan, if that helps any, but when this icon shows up and starts
the dreaded download, everything lags! I need this shut off, once and for
all! I've turned off automatic updates, but how do I stop it in its tracks
right now?

Try this...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to a double click: Automatic Updates |
Under Startup type set to Disabled | Apply | OK |
Scroll down to a double click: Background Intelligent Transfer Service |
Under Startup type set to Disabled | Apply | OK |
Close Services | Reboot

Yes, (hard to believe no suggested disabling the service in other thread...?)

If really paranoid, can also disable the login ability of two services for
each hardware profile you might have. (right click the service, properties,
Log-in Tab)

But simply disabling the "Automatic Update" service will prevent it in the
future.
This won't stop it currently, will need one more reboot. (and you'll have
check and update manually). You won't see that icon anymore!

Someone else will have to comment if you need to "clean" anything off the
computer. When your calmer, I'd suggest Windows Update page and get that
service pack yourself. Recommend a pizza while its doing it.

Good Luck!

That's the thing - I can't tell what it's trying to update on my system, but
apparantly the Service Pack is what the 55% was.

I went in and told it 'turn off automatic updating' which is what it's on
for now. I'm going to reboot shortly and cross my fingers that the stupid
icon never shows up again. Just another reason to hate microsoft, I
suppose.

HI,

Why don`t you install the XP SP2 blocker, so automatic updates won`t try to
download the SP2.

Havin same prob mate, downloaded Sp2 then couldnt access internet thru internet explorer until I disabled WUAUCLT in task manager. Have disabled auto-updates, stopped both services Wes Vogel advised in his reply but problem re appears as soon as I start up again even tho I cleared registry with msconfig. Every time I log on I have to manually disable Wuauclt before I can go online (It has 2 or 3 entries in task manager eating all cpu usage). If you find answer plz let me know. Cheers.

I can better that........it's running 11 times in Task Manager even
though I've told Windows I want to disable Automatic Updates.

Mr Gates certainly has problems grasping the concept of what "no"
actually means when it comes to XP phoning home......I wonder why?

And no, I've run all instances of wuauclt.exe through just about every
virus and spyware checkers out there and it's not a suspicious file.

I'm surprised more hasn't been made of this privacy violation.
