wuauclt.exe

I was playing an online game last night at home. I could
hear my computer's hard drive clicking away as though
something else was running. I checked the processes and
noticed a program called WUAUCLT.exe running. I had never
noticed this program before. When I did a google search I
find confusing information. Some sites say its a worm or
virus that allows a remote user to execute commands from
my home computer. Today I came into work and I find the
same WUAUCLT.exe running in the background....I am running
Windows XP in work and at home. I see in the Microsoft
Knowledge base that WUAUCLT.exe is loaded with Windows ME.
My question....What is the program and what does it do?
Thanks in advance.

wuauclt - wuauclt.exe - Process Information
Process File: wuauclt or wuauclt.exe

you connect to the Internet,Wuauclt checks the Microsoft website for updates
to Windows Millennium Edition.

There's a KB article about an error it can cause, so it a legit windows
program:

The bad news is there is a trojan that has the exact same name. If you
didn't upgrade from ME I would suspect the trojan, in which case you need to
get rid of it.
