wuauclt.exe

wuauclt.exe is apparently impossible to stop.

every time my computer bogs down randomly, i open up task manager and
see this service running.

there is no possible way that my computer needs to check microsoft's
server for updates 48 times per day.

WTF!

it doesn't matter that i've turned off automatic updates and
restarted...it's still there running!

if the service is set to anything other than "automatic," i can't even
access microsoft update.

if it's disabled it will tell me that i have to download microsoft
update, and if it's on manual it gives me an error.

i guess i'm resigned to starting the service and manually checking for
updates...this seems to be the only way to keep it from running in the
background at the worst times.

any thoughts?

Then perhaps you should post your query to the Windows Update-specific
newsgroup, d00d.

without getting into a long-winded back and forth, lemme just point out
that this is an issue with a service being run by xp--not a question
about Windows Update.

which is why i posed the question to the xp group after google and msn
search got hung up on the "windows update" part of the query...much
like you did.

thx anyway
