Getting the twain interface working on an XP user account

WinXP Home. Epson 1200S SCSI scanner, Twain 5 interface, NewSoft Page
Manager
The scanner and software were formerly on a Win98SE system.

I have installed the scanner on an XP Admin account using updated Twain
drivers from Epson and everything works there with the Acquire button on
Page Manager firing up the Twain interface.

But on a User account when I start Page Manager and use the Acquire
button, the Twain interface does NOT fire up and I can only scan with
the XP scanner wizard.

How do I make the Twain work on the user accounts please?

Sorry for answering my own post - I solved this by dragging the C:\Epson
folder into the Shared Documents folder.

Are you using XP home or XP Pro? (I see you said Home).

If Home, you will never get the User Account to work.

In Pro, you may be able to set the write permissions on the folder where
Epson TWAIN and Epson software is installed. If you install the Epson
software as a Logged in User, it may work
You do have to run the install for each User account.

OK - thanks. What puzzled me is that it DOES work on User account if I
first switch to Admin account, open Page Manager, use the scanner, and
close and then log off the Admin account. Then "switch user" to user
account. Then instead of getting "error locating data source" I get the
twain interface working properly on the User account. But if I log off
the User account and then log back in again later, that "error locating
data source" comes back.

OK - I disconnected the scanner and removed it from device manager (in
admin account)
Gave user account admin priveliges, installed epson stuff on that
account, connected hardware, let new hardware wizard reinstall the
drivers on that acccount, then turned it back into a user account again.
Same problem - error locating data source.

But yet again - when I used the scanner on Admin account and closed it
and logged off the admin account, then logged onto User account, it
worked fine. But next time I log onto the User account it won't work.

The problem with the third solution, at least for me, is that I experienced
the same perplexing problem as you. That is I fiddled with the permissions,
signed onto a non-admin account, and it might work once. The next time it
wouldn't!

Basically, here's what I tried before I had to attend to something else:

1. Changing the permissions in the hierarchy of folders
C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\EPFB5\ES0007 (as per the Kurzweil site)

2. Changing the run permissions of the programs in the folder
C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\EPFB5

I suspect, TWAIN is creating or accessing a file (temporary?) somewhere
else.

I'm stuck until I find some more free time.

Thanks - I'll try those. I don't think XP Home supports sharing in the
way described (there are only two or three basic options for sharing)
but I will see if I can modify those suggestions for XP Home - I now
know what folder to play with.

I don't have those exact options on XP Home so I tried something I got
on an MS forum relating to another program - tip supplied by Michael
Bednarek http://mbednarek.com/ - seems to be very helpful for those
programs that won't work in User accounts.

When logged in as administrator navigate to relevant directory and from
a command prompt execute following command
cacls . /e /g Users:f

which grants write priveliges to all users for NEW files only

If that doesn't work, you can extend it to ALL files in the folder with
the command
cacls *.* /e /g Users:f

This seems to have allowed me to use the Twain interface in a User
account. Phew!

Thanks - I'll try those. I don't think XP Home supports sharing in the
way described (there are only two or three basic options for sharing)
but I will see if I can modify those suggestions for XP Home - I now
know what folder to play with.

Just in case you need it in the future, you can get to all of the
Permissions in XP Home Edition by starting Windows in Safe Mode. Keep
hitting F8 (I think) just before Windows starts, i.e. at the end of the
BIOS bootstrap.
