I have a post service pack 3 problem with win xp. when I log on to windows
the found new hardware window appears. windows has found a new hardware, a
printer. I do not have a printer connected, and I have ticked off that I do
not wat to install this device again. but alas it pops up every time. I have
deactivated printspool. the question is how do I fix this problem?

Start > Printers and Faxes, right click on the printer if there & click
on Delete.

Be suprised if it has anything to do with SP3.

Don't know if you found anything by googling, try these different
keywords.

Can you email me a screen shot of the Start > Printers and Faxes page,
or upload it to a site of your choice.

If you'd post the actual links there, I might try them out. I don't use
shortcut URLs.

i have been trying out the links yuo gave me. still no fix to the problem. I
can post the screenshot, but I doubt it will tell you anything. the printer
window is empty, short of the add new printer icon. so there is not much to
see there. what i have done is to start regedit. i tried to connect a printer
som time ago, an removed it shortly after. I thought that the problem might
have something to do with that. so I have deleted any references to printer
in the registry. but alas after booting, windows still finds a printer. what
happens then is that when I folow the guide and try installing a printer, it
fails due too that it does not find any relevant program for the printer.

Checkpoint: In the Device Manager Unhide Hidden Devices in the Device
Manager, view the problem devices and remove them manually from there.

Added info:

This workaround is for an HP Printer, use accordingly:

1. When the Found New Hardware Wizard starts at startup of the computer,
click <next>.

2. When it asks you for the HP disk, (the next thing that will require a
response from you probably), click <ok>. However, do NOT insert the disk
into your CD-ROM drive.

3. On the next screen that comes up, there will be a button that is already
highlighted telling the wizard where to find the printer driver (which is
what it is looking for). This button will be pointing it at "other media,
CD-ROM,etc.

The trick is to DESELECT this button. At that point, the button for your C:
drive will become active and you can select the C: drive. It will also
probably be prompting you with the location for the already installed HP
printer driver that is somewhere on your C: drive. (If not, you need to
click browse and locate the driver).

4. After you have deselected the CDROM and selected the C: drive, click
<ok> (or <next>) The Wizard then makes a second copy of your printer driver
(and, by the way, creates a second "installed printer" in your Control
Panel/Printers). And then, the wizard finally completes and tells you that
you have successfully installed the new hardware.

5. On subsequent startup, the Wizard should then NOT run.

From a previous post/reply:

I just installed an HP 960cse on XP Pro using USB. I had a weird problem,
where it kept finding and trying to install the device, saying "access
denied". I found that putting the install disk in the computer, running the
"remove software" command, and then plugging in the printer and letting xp
do the install fixed the permissions problems.

It seems as the problem is fixed now. no new hardware found showed up on
boot. I could not unstalled the unknown unit under printer. Only deactivate,
apparently it is important for boot so no uninstall possible. If you know how
to remove i would appreciate this. but for know this seems to work. thank you
:)

I can't edit that key in registry. I lack lptenum.

Did you do a manual search or did you use Find?

If you used Find, you must collapse the + so that only My Computer is
showing.

I use RegSeeker
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
RegSeeker is very good for registry searching, click on > Find in
registry, untick all except HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Put lptenum into > Search for: & click Search.
