Favorites loading in the wrong window

I just reinstalled Windows XP and IE is displaying the strangest behavior.

I have a few folders inside the Links folder in my Favorites to make them
more available. The problem is that more often than not, when I choose a
Favorite from the Links toolbar, it loads on a different IE window, not the
one I chose it in.

The weirdest part is that this doesn't happen if I go up to the Favorites
menu, then to Links, and find the favorite I want that way. Also, there seems
to be no problem if I chose a favorite from the Links toolbar as long as it's
not inside another folder inside Links. Does anybody have any idea of how I
can fix this? It's driving me nuts, and totally killing the purpose of the
Links toolbar.

Check that you have 'Reuse windows for launching shortcuts' checked on the
Advanced tab of Internet Options.

You could also try draging and dropping your shortcuts from the Links
toolbar and sub-folders to the window you want to display them in ( handy if
you are using tabbed browsing with the MSN Search toolbar and tabbed
browser)

For something different have a look at

http://www.iecustomizer.com/LinksEBDownload.htm

This is a registry tweak to convert your links toolbar into a links explorer
bar ( displayed on the left hand side of the explorer window) which gives
you more screen real estate to play with and more menu options to manage
just your links without having to navigate through your Favorites folder.

The "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" option is checked, I don't think
my problem has to do with that anyway.

Thanks for the ideas, but I'm not looking for an alternative, I just want
this to work the way it's supposed to.

This has been a longstanding issue but I can't recall having seen
it mentioned in here at least for a long time.

Max S. used to answer this question the most.
I think he had some workarounds for it too.

See what you can find with this search:

Good luck

Thank you very much, now I get it. When I reinstalled XP I lost the IE
service pack that fixed this problem.

Thanks again
