Latency Problem with the "Favorites" in IE Window Shell

Alan London

Please help me to find a cure or report this as an ongoing bug to the wiz
kids at MS...

Whenever I create a new user in XP Pro I find the Favorite URL links in the
IE browser explorer mode loads quite quickly and everything is fine. However
after making a change or adding a bookmark the URL listings in explorer view
opens very very slowly forever more. The loading time is slowed to a crawl
only after making a change to the URL listings (Favorites). I find the IE
loading time unacceptable when opening the Favorites to browse URL listings.
So I hardly ever use IE any more.

Could this be a hardware performance issue? I'm running 800mhz/PentiumIII
with standard L1/L2 cache as of 2000 model ASUS board. I do have 512 mb of
RAM.

Is this a bug in XP and/or Internet Explorer?

Well I will chalk this up as a bug that MS never addressed or something they
need in the software for control and function.

You MVP's need more study. :(

Excuse me? You post at 8.12am on a workday (when I'm working, of course),
and then post a disrespectful message on the same day before I've even been
able to finish my shift.

You need to realise that [we] MVPs do this stuff in what spare time we have
left over after earning an income, looking after a family, and trying to get
occasional air and sunshine.

So what's the verdict? You could have at least let me know if I have a
problem. :)

IE is not working properly with regard to this delay whilst opening the
browser "after" a change has been made to the URL Favorites. Works perfectly
before any changes are made on a new user. Once a Bookmark is managed or
added performance drops significantly upon initial launch of IE. So I end up
using an alternative browser that doesn't have such problems.

Thank you for your attention and please try and repeat this on your box see
what you come up with. I believe it is a major bug and not my box.

Cheers Sandi

Reducing the size of the TIF directory has no effect.

It is an issue related to the IE GUI and memory or processing of URL
shortcut links data into memory.

There is a long delay to produce the URL list visually in the shell. It
doesn't happen to a new user account prior to making changes with the
Favorites cache thru the IE browser.

For example the time it takes to load the "Organize Favorite" shell from
Favorites in the IE toolbar. You will notice the same latency whilst the URL
shortcut links load into the shell. That same problem affects the IE browser
shell when the "Favorites" button is selected to open the explorer view that
reveals the URL shortcut links on the left hand side of the window. I seems
as though the process is refreshing or searching each links directory
location every time the IE browser is opened. Problem is this doesn't happen
until a change is made to the Favorites URL shortcut cache.
