Extracting Win2K Files from Setup disk

S

Steven O.

I am running into a problem when trying to create a dial-up networking
connection. A particular file -- ICWCONN1.EXE -- crashes. According
to what I can find on the Web, this may have to do with incompatible
versions -- I had installed SP4 (a mistake), and then uninstalled it,
and things got screwed in the process.

In any event, I can find the names of the files that need to be
replaced. But I went to Microsoft's Web site, searching for
instructions on how to extract specific files from the install CD.
They describe a utility that works for Win 98 and Win ME, but I can't
find anything comparable for Win 2K.

Can anyone tell me how to extract specific files from the Win2K disk?

Thanks,
Steve O.

You'll probably want to download the current service pack, extract the
files, then expand a new copy from the extracted \i386 directory.

From a command prompt you can expand the file. An example;

expand E:\I386\calc.ex_ %windir%\system32\calc.exe

would expand a new copy of calc.exe to the \system32 directory.

An example to extract a service pack files without installing them, execute
J:\Win2kSP3\SP3.exe /x
Then when prompted, specify a directory to hold the extracted files.

You installed, then uninstalled the SP4 right?

Not your qustion but if you still have a
%systemroot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\
directory the previous version of the file/files may be there. This
may invole more than one file and may also include registry changes...

Did you try (or want to) just re-installing the previous SP?
