How to play .mov files in Win2K?

S

Steven O.

I am taking a class, comes with a textbook, textbook has CD, CD has
some videos in .mov format. I was surprised to discover that Windows
Media Player version 9 does not recognize this media type. When I
"force" MP to play the files, it plays the sound, but not the video.
Is there some codec I can download that will let MP 9 play the video?
Or should I be using Apple's media player?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

You need Apple QuickTime to view MOV data files.

I wouldn't install Apple software on my PC just to play .mov files. Surely
there must be another way? Why would anyone install Mac software on their
PC?

Apple does write Win32 apps !

In addition:
If you post to UseNet with your TRUE, not a munged, email address then you have invited the
swen Internet worm [aka; W32/Gibe-F] to visit you.

The Swen is news spelled backwards. The reason it is called this is because the Swen worm
harvests email addresses from UseNet News Groups. It has an engine that allows it to post
itself to UseNet News Groups and well as it has its own email engine. From the list of
email addresses that it has harvested, it will then email itself to those addresses.

Huh? Did you know that a large portion of Microsoft's revenue in the 90's was writing Apple Software? Just because Apple writes Apple software does not mean they cannot write 32-bit PC software. If an application installs in Win32 you can be sure it was made for Win32. If you have troubles with it that happens. And QuickTime is nott always very friendly. But there is no other way to play a mov file other then using QuickTime. That I know of anjyway. Oh maybe Swish...not sure.

Thanks to George and David for the information.

I've gotten along thus far without playing .mov files, I guess I'll just
continue to get along without 'em.

I installed QuickTime on a test system ... didn't like it. It seemed to
install some unnecessary stuff that runs at startup. Who knows what else it
might be installing? Nope, not for me. I'll just do without .mov
capabilities.

That's qtask.exe - I really hate when software assumes you want it running in the background
all the time. Yeah right, I use the application for a half an hour a week but it wants to
keep a stub in RAN all the time. What a waste of my resources. Luckily, MSConfig.exe takes
care of easily !

Also removing it using regedit does the same thing. The Real kicker is Real One Player. Now there is an obnoxious application. The only way to stop that from firing at boot is to write Logon\Logoff scripts. But of course my method is STAY FAR AWAY. QuickTime is tractable.
