explorer.exe has generated errors..

Bill H.

Suddenly, a win2k install stopped working. It starts up, but then an error
about "explorer.exe has generated errors" or such and windows stops working.

I tried replacing the explorer.exe with the same file from another win2k
install, but that didn't help.

We can start in safe mode, but that's about all.

Got any ideas out there??

Even tried a restore to last known good config. Didn't work, either.

Thanks.

The fact that you can load in safe mode often means that there is some
third-party component that is loading up and causing problems.
To disable these:
- Open Internet Explorer
- Clear the checkbox for "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires
restart) found in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced

Let me know if this helps,

Did not see your msg in time.

BUT, this error is not with Internet Explorer, but with the system (or
desktop) Explorer. Sorry for any confusion.

Found out that the admin account, and any new accounts I created, would work
just fine.

So, I created a new account, copied all the folders from the old user to the
new (c:\documents and settings), and all is well in Oz. Did discover a
couple of folders that would not copy (copy error of some sort) so went back
and blew them away (mostly cache folders and temp internet files kind of
stuff).

Old user still crashes, new user, so far, has not.

Actually, there was no confusion: Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer
are more similar than you may think. In fact, essential they are the same
thing, with different user interfaces.

Did you try the solution that I provided?
