Explorer.exe and Explorer(2).exe !?

After my computer starts I get an error message that
Explorer has to close. The screen goes blank and then
Explorer returns as if nothing happened (but runs faster).

In my Windows directory there are two copies of explorer.
Explorer(2).exe is dated 2001 and is 977KB. Explorer.exe
is dated 2004 and is 980KB.

I've tried deleting Explorer.exe with the intention of
renaming Explorer(2).exe, but seconds after I do another
one appears!

I'm worried that Explorer is being used for some foul
purpose by some web-company. Has anyone heard of this
before?
