Windows Explorer Error needs to restart

My basic question is, is it possible to just relpace the explorer.exe and
iexlpore.exe files with fresh copies without having to do a full restore ?
What if anything would be affected by doing this?

Now the background:

Recently I was infected with a virus that had a fieldday on my system.
Including mailing out several hundred emails and all sorts of other stuff.

After running several AV programs several times and manually deleting some
files along with numerous other steps, I believe I got the virus out.
Unfortunately now I have a few problems.
I have since installed a new AV program along with new firewall to minimize
any further risks.

However when I run certain programs I occassionally receive the Windows
Explorer Error this program needs to shut down message. After I click OK and
it does its restart everything is fine again for a time, then it comes back
up. This only happens with a few select programs that it did not happen
before.

Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated

SFC (System File Checker) might take care of you
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

but it can become very complicated to get it to work.
If your XP CD isn't SP2 you need to slipstream your CD
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
Plus any hot fix's added due to autoupdates
http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/updatepack.html of course it's not from MS
so questionable. (I'd trust it)

But the above is an option.

I'd do a repair install if I were you
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
Even then if your XP CD isn't SP2 you will still need to slipstream
it.

Bottom line, when you deleted the malware you most likely removed
vital files need for operation.
