.dll errors

I am having problems with a computer I purchased at a garage sale. When I
turn it on, I occasionally get a blank screen. Also, at times it shuts down
and restarts on its owns. It has Windows XP. I always get these messages
when I start the computer:
"The application or DLL
c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.net\Framework\v.1.1.4322\mscorwks.dll is not a valid
Windows Image. Please check against your installation diskette." I do not
have any diskette.
When I click OK, I get the following message:
"c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.net\Framework\V.1.1.4322\mscorwks.dll could not be
loaded"
Does anyone know how can I solve this problem?
Thank you.

Wipe the hard drive and reinstall XP. They did give you an XP CD, right?

You have no idea what state the machine is in.

If you buy a PC second-hand, the FIRST thing you should do is wipe the hard
drive completely.

How do you know what viruses, keyloggers etc there are on that machine?

I really, really hope you haven't used it on the net to get your e-mail, or
been visiting your online banking - for instance?

Wipe the Drive - re-install XP.

The file COULD be a baddy. Check here:

If I acquired a used computer, no matter who previously owned it, the
first thing I would do with it would be to reinstall the operating
system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer has been maintained,
what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and
spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody
else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddy porn, etc., and I
wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

I'm sure that I'm echoing some of the replies to this message, but the
best thing to do when you obtain a used pc is to format the drive and
reinstall windows. If you didn't get a restore cd along with the pc,
then your best bet would be to contact the manufacturer and ask them for
a replacement. Typically you might have to pay a small fee to cover
shipping and handling, but in the long run you'll be better off since
you don't know the current state of the windows install that on the pc.
