What did TurboTax Support have to say about this?

Is your computer fully patched at Windows Update?

Error 25007: Could not load fusion microsoft.net framework 2.0

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied

Turbo Tax needs .NET Framework 2.0 to work. If you don't have it, get it +
all the updates.

Or maybe get TaxACT instead, and save a fortune?

But I don't think "TaxACT" guides you or holds your hand as much. (still
thinking about it over TurboTax or TaxCut, since it is a LOT cheaper than
the other two, and yet has good reviews; the State and Fed efile fees really
add up on the other two programs for the total cost)

TaxAct and other low-cost options aren't well-suited for folks that
will require complicated returns.

True. Good point.
What would you consider a complicated return? Like if you don't have a
business, and are just a Joe Blow homeowner, who maybe has some money
invested in stocks, I guess that probably wouldn't be too complicated. But
if you've got LOTs of investments or properties, or special deductions,
maybe?

Net Framework version 2.0 is required for opening and operating TurboTax for
tax year version 2008 and 2007. Until this part is repaired or installed
properly, it won't work. Net Framework version 2.0 installation is part of
the TurboTax installation for versions noted. The installer will search the
PC for 2.0, if not found, will install that first. If subsequent patches
for 2.0 are a problem for TurboTax, its an unknown component for this
respondent. Check with Intuit/TT support.

If you intend to use TT for subsequent yearly use, make allowances for
archiving your final tax that you file with the IRS. Print out all
paperwork for your own copy, and store this will all supporting paperwork
where you arrive at your income and deductions. Save the final in PDF
format, not ".tax" format to multiple removable media types and store with
the paper copy and safe locations. Do not save these on the PC as they have
sensitive personal data. The ".tax" format can be used to recover all your
personal data so you don't have to type it all in again the following tax
year in the subsequent version of TT. This part is not terribly important
for archiving, just handy from year to year.

One more thing about *.tax files. Although "this" year's TT can retrieve
some data from "last" year's *.tax files, those *.tax files are only
fully usable by the TT executable for the year that created them. In
other words, if you have (as I do) 1993my.tax, you won't be able to open
it and look at the return unless you kept TT for 1993 and re-install it
(assuming that it runs on whatever OS you now have). Those early
versions of TT did not offer the option to save in pdf.

The "gotcha" part is really the OS as you move from one tax year to the
other. That is, if you want to look at the old *.tax file with the older
version of TT which I assume may not install and run in the current version
of XP. And that is only possible if you kept that installation version of
TT on CD. The only alternative was a paper copy before the PDF save came
along.

Believe there were similar "gotchas" in Quicken as well, but that's another
story.

You can always use the free online version or get TaxCut.
