DEVICES or APPLICATIONS DISABLED - ERROR

P

Pat Patterson

I just recently upgraded from 98 to XP, and tried to load
an older version of ROXIO Easy CD Creator(Version 5.0),
now upon logging on to my account this window pops up in
my task bar. This is what the pop up displays:

==========================================================
DEVICES or APPLICATIONS DISABLED

'DirectCd' will cause Windows to become unstable.
Windows has prevented these drivers from loading. Click
here for more details.

Then proceeds to open "Help and Support Center" window
==========================================================
DirectCd was part of the ROXIO software.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Pat Patterson

Upgrade the Roxio software to a version compatible with XP, www.roxio.com.

You need a later version than that: Get the latest upgrade - 5.3.5 at

Dear Ms. Kelly,

I can not thank you enough for the file you offered Pat. I have saved
a copy on to my computer and will try it. Please note: Roxio does not support
Creator versions 4 or 5 anymore, but they are happy to sell you number 7. I
have removed the Roxio software with the ADD/Remove program, I will try to
install your file first then reinstall the Roxio software.

With kindest regards, Greg Rolf aka Dumb Contractor

Dear Ms. Kelly

I tried the download but it did not work; I am still getting the
unstable warnings, and I am personally becoming unstable. I would like to
abandon the cd creator software until I can afford a new version. How can I
fix the damage caused by installing the fourth version? The computor will not
shut-down and the drivers are disabled. Can I reinstall the up-grade version
of windows XP Pro to correct the problems? or should I strip the C: drive
with WipeDrive software and start all over again? again.

Well again, I thank you for your advice.

With kindest regards, Greg Rolf aka Dumber Contractor 4.0

Dear Kelly,

I am not sure what "under services" means. In addition, I downloaded
some information from microsoft last night that provides directions for
deleting the HKEY_LOCAL_etc... stuff you just asked about. There are amble
warnings from MS about even looking at "The registry" much less deleting
things; so should I try following their step by step instructions (starting
with a new restore point first), or reinstall Windows XP pro upgrade?

Thanks again for your help. Greg Rolf

Dear Kelly,

Yes to reloading XP, or attacking the registry to make the
corrections? (Maybe there is a reason I choose Dumb Contractor as a
nick-name) However, I would be willing to try the registry rehab for the
sheer fun of it, of course I am assuming I can correct any operator errors by
reinstalling XP. Would this be true?

Happy Holidays to you also! Greg Rolf
