Convoluted access to Google home page

Hi
I've a problem with one (just one) web page and I'm not sure what is
the best NG to seek advice.
But anyway..............
Using WinXP SP2 with DSL internet in a well-maintained, virus and
spyware-free system.
When I try to log onto the Google home page (personalized) at
http://www.google.com/ig
I get the following message:

"We're sorry...
.... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer
virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process
your request right now"

It then asks me to to type in the characters shown. After having done
this, the page opens without problems.
Occasionally, however, the characters DON'T show and it tell me that I
must enable images to see the characters to be typed. However, I DO
have images enabled. Indeed, just logging off and back onto Google home
again very often shows the characters (without having made any changes
to images being enabled or disabled in my browser (FireFox)).
I have scanned several times with a variety of AVs (AVGFree, Kaspersky,
OneCare) and none has indicated anything untoward. In addition, other
than this problem, my internet access works poerffectly.
Any clues as to what might be wrong?

TIA
Paul

In case anybody's interested, I've solved this problem by running good
ol' sfc /scannow.
So, it seems it wasn't so much a virus as a corrupted system file.
