Not able to change home page from Google

Guest

I recently installed Windows XP, I have a cable modem from Cox High
Speed Internet. I have an icon on my desktop that takes me to My preferred
home page which is the Cox Home Page, however whenever I visit any site and
want to return to my homepage by clicking on the home icon on the top of the
page. I am sent to the Google site, I have tried changing this many times,
but I can not stop Google from being my Homepage.
This is not a major concern, but I just find it annoying, I tried to
e-mail Google, but they do not respond to e-mails. Any help would be greatly
appreciated

Do you have the Google Toolbar installed?

This is unlikely to be a Google issue. Do you have any third party network
connection software that has 'profiles' in it? Or any third party security
suite software? That's where I'd start looking.

I do (latest version), and I don't see any place where it would control the
browser's home/start page....I just checked.

I deleted Adaware [sp] and also spy sweeper, I only have Mcafee virus scan and firewall running., still can not get rid of Google as homepage ? This more of an annoyance than anything else.

I can imagine!

What happens if you try to change this when you've booted into Safe Mode ?
Test it.

I will try the safe mode, I have already performed a clean boot as suggested by Microsoft and that did not stop it. Somehow Google has imbedded itself somewhere. I can retype a new home page, but a letter G stays in front of it and it will always go back to a Google Homepage. Thanks for any help.

I tried the safe mode, but internet explorer won't work in safe mode, I
can't access my internet provider. I guess this will have to go on the back
burner till I find out some more information. Thanks.

When you chose 'Safe Mode', did you choose 'Safe Mode with Networking'?

Why did you delete Adaware? It's a good program to use, and no one program
handles all malware. On a different note, McAfee security suite can be
problematic. That's one possible cause of your problem. In any event you
would be better off getting rid of it, and using some of the other
alternatives. There are good free or low cost AV firewall programs. Avoid
the large security suites, especially Symantec and McAfee.

At the risk of being painfully obvious, if you, in Internet Explorer,
go to Tools/Internet Options, what is the address for the home page?
If it shows Google, then go to the site you want to set as your home
page. Go once again to Tools/Internet Options, and click on Use
Current. Or more simply, type in the address you desire into that Home
Page selection.

I've use Google toolbar before without it taking over my homepage
preferences.

Have you tried opening Internet Explorer, and clicking
Tools>Internet Options? From that dialog box you can change your
IE homepage. Your preferred homepage is just a shortcut to the
website that the company wants you to go to. If this does not work,
contact the internet service provider and ask them for help.

Stevo

I shouldn't help a Red Sox fan.

Stevo, you need to quote at least part of the message to which you reply,
otherwise there is no context. You may not realize that this is actually a
newsgroup, not a forum or board. Many posters use a newsreader to access it
(I would recommend you do that. The web interface is awful.). With a
newsreader it is common to only download the latest messages so the previous
messages in a thread are not visible.

XP comes with newsreader, outlook express. There are others as well. Here
is a link on how to set up OE for newsgroup access:
